Sorted a bag of toot in the bedroom, with bits sorted for the charity shop
Used up some toiletries today as part of that challenge (use up, not buy up!) - so another one bit the dust today

My OH died 5 yrs ago & I have still not managed to clear his study (loft conversion). There are dozens of books many are "heavy tomes" - 15thC Irish history etc also a huge number of 1st editions/signed 1st editions. Where do I get rid of these as I do not think that they will sell in the average high street charity shop. I will NOT have anything to do with ebay who made my life hell when I tried closing his account. They told me only he could close it - how does a dead man close an account???

Your help would be very much appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Lu lu,

Oxfam will gladly take these - they have a specialist book shop that sells a wide variety of reference books, out of print books and technical manuals etc

We decided to be ruthless and although it was very hard we found the best homes we could for the items we had, but we did have to throw some of them away. But more importantly we selected 2 or 3 meaningful pieces which we display in the house.

I think I'm going to have to try this approach - I don't even have my own stuff on display as it has to jostle for position with everything else!

  • yesterday I tackled the wedding box and wedding photos from my first marriage nearly 20 years ago. They have been in the loft here since we moved in 10 years ago. I have got rid of 4 boxes of stuff. My ex mil died the following year - should I email my ex sil ( we still get on, but she is in australia) and ask if she would like to send ober the photos of her mother and family. They are not the official ones, but there are some great ones of her family.

It was very wierd to go through them. It was such a happy day - and reading the cards, I was overwhelmed by everyones happiness and optimism.

But - how fashions change :-)

Now, I am going through tapes - boxes and boxes of music cassettes, and watching a video a day before chucking it. ooooh , the stuff is overwhelming

  • Hello declutterers :)

I'm trying to get rid of 100 things from my flat before Christmas. I've been going for 3 weeks so I want to hit 50 by the end of the week to be on target and i'm a bit behind!
Got rid of a few bits of jewellery today in various bundles to the bin / cs because I feel like i'm cheating counting something as small as a pair of earrings as 1 thing got rid of :o

I think a better way to deal with things like the kitchen junk drawers would be to tip out everything and then pick up the things you want off the floor and sweep away everything else. That way you're not spending ages considering things individually and it's much quicker.
I should do something like that with my wardrobe but i'm not brave enough!

I've been trying ebay but I'm mostly finding the price of posting things too prohibitive - I've got some clothes that people might pay £5 for but by the time I've paid royal mail, wherever sells me packing materials, ebay and paypal fees it's not worth my time anymore as i end up with less than a pound :(

Hi MF - I'm not a fan of ebay - it was too much of a pain and got messed around too many times. I know it works for many people on here but I'm quite happy for local charity shops to have my clutter. Plus if the sales assistants do buy some of the bargains themselves, then I have no problem with that either, after all they are helping raise funds for the charity.

    Sorted a bag of recycling.
    Still using up the toiletries.

Going to find 20 things in the living room and kitchen to get rid of.

    PG Tips monkey :)
New jeans (Gran got them for me as they were only £3, they fit lovely!)
Various bits of chocolate/beauty stuff for hampers. (Mum's hamper complete - only another five to go!)

    Out

Large bag of stuff to charity shop
Old school and college work/brochures/magazines recycled
Videos and cassette tapes binned (home recordings, so charity shop wouldn't have taken them)
    One Ebay parcel posted
Dress, trousers and top to Mum (too big for me)
Four bits of out of date or unidentifiable food from freezer

    Pending Out

Old pillow, polystyrene box and several large cardboard boxes to go to tip.

Spare room is in a shocking state as I have pulled out the contents of most of the boxes as fed up with the room - want to get it sorted to look like a proper guest room/gym and not a general dumping ground! To be continued tomorrow...

I have a PG monkey too C! Cat wasn't impressed and tried to attack him. Meant to say that old cardboard boxes are often sought after on Freecycle for people moving or ebaying. Our local tip recycles them too.

I sorted loads of bits from the kitchen, quite quickly. I was ruthless and still shocked to find out of date stuff.
