The Great Declutter Part 2
Comments
-
I haven't posted for nearly 4 weeks, had a week off work and enjoyed the break from sitting at a computer and then have been busy and haven't got back into MSE.
I managed my first 100 in 10, lots of ebaying, recycling and charity shopping and we've been busy doing lots of things relating to storage at home.
Our front cupboard which mainly was a kitchen overspill, bags, walking boots and spare gloves etc now has a new shelf unit (from IKEA bought for somewhere else but actually fitted here best) at right angles to the old one. The floor now has space for the carpet cleaner which was in the garage and the dyson which used to live wherever we left it.... Hooks on the back of the door hold cotton bags and shopping bags which used to hang on front handle and on the floor and Hooks inside hold the garden folding chairs, more bags and the duster etc.
Downstairs loo now has 4 double hooks on the door rather than 2 singles so more space for coats and OH took a shelf unit out of the garage and sawed in down to make one that fits between wall and basin (where IKEA stuff didn't quite) and now has shelves and IKEA baskets in it with hats, gloves etc :-) The mini shelf thing my shoes were on is now under my dressing table.
We've taken out the fittings in my wardrobe and replaced (another IKEA job!) as I own more dresses and skirts than I did 3 1/2 years ago - although now need to get rid of packaging and old fittings,.
And most of all we've painted the whole garage floor, most of the walls and ceiling and created lots of storage and work benches for OH at the far end and a smaller bit for me for gardening by the front. Had a good declutter too and it's now a much nicer, less dusty and more useable space!
So we're doing ok. Trouble is we've got in laws this week and my parents then next weekend and so some desperate clearing/shoving of stuff away might have to happen over the next few days!

Afternoon all....
Well done yorkielass you have been busy. Sounds as though you made lots of progress with re-organising space in your home.
Greent sounds as though you are on a roll too with the decluttering.... I need to sort out another 10 items today for my 50 in 5 challenge so after typing this and having my lunch I will then make a start.
Cake went down well with OH mom so I scored lots of brownie points.
Bad news was she gave me a carrier bag full of books(21 in total) so now I have to find the same amount of books to go out or another 21 items to be back on track!
Don't get me wrong I'm very grateful but I'm trying to de-clutter!!!!!!!! aaaaaaaaaggghhhhhh :rotfl:

Wow thats fantastic.
Don't you find that decluttering has a domino effect - you start in one room and then end up re-organising half the house!
You have inspired me to have another go at our garage. We have cleared out a load of carp from it already but yours sounds fantastic! Did you use special paint for the floor? Ours is really gritty concrete.0 -

had made big progress with decluttering & keeping on top of housework by stuff like making sure that washing up always done before kids go to bed so felt like not as much to do when came back down & therefore did more. BUT they've had tv ban for most of March cos they keep pulling all books off their bookshelves so (a) usually a pile of books in lounge that I refuse to put back on shelves cos fed up of & they only rarely put back when desperate for tv (in fact first time all back from when declared this is rule was their - well SS is closest description I guess - did most of it) so it looks untidy even if do everything else, and (b) without cbeebies bedtime hour to tell them "not bedtime yet" I'm getting them in bed much earlier cos they're willing to accept bedtime is when they're tired so not getting time to do washing up then & don't feel like after in bed so mostly getting left till morning. This added to washing build-up for various reasons, being able to get out in garden n do stuff there, plus getting closer to potty training youngest hence more attention required has meant that it's deteriorated again and I REALLY need to get a grip on it again.

Hi Folks - and welcome to Plimsol - sounds like you are working hard to get your littlies in line (do you see what I did there!) - much better to do that rather than just give in (which is so much easier). Its OK - I can dispense good advice like that because I'm a grandma ....
So I had a brill flylady anniversary Wednesday (Leather) and took all my shoes, boots and bags out of the wardrobe, sorted, boxed and even CS'd some handbags. My 100 in 10 challenge is going quite well..yesterday was day 4

Hope your week is improving Jexy.
Wow Yorkielass what a flurry of activity.
Garage floors - I am a big fan of painting them and the walls. Makes the garage like a room in the house (not a gritty grotty hole). We visited a house in Slovenia (dont ask - I'll tell you about it when all the clutter is gone) where the guy had a double garage whicj was totally painted white with a wash hand basin in the corner. It was soooo lovely and I guess having it nice means you are motivated to keep it so. Ours is blue but white would make it so light and nice. I must ask Megsdad to put up a couple of big strong lights btw - I'm always grovelling about in the gloom.Stay clutter-free
No new stuff unless to replace broken items that are essential.
£2 savings pot (started Oct 09) £182 so far (£100 of which is banked)
Roadkill jar (found money) 87p and 20 eurocents0 -
Thanks for all the nice messages - it does feel so much better. We moved into the new build house 3 1/2 years ago with a mixture of things we'd bought and things from a student house my now in laws had bought for my now husband and so spent time and money furnishing rooms and decorating but never quite got the storage right so that's my mission!
Regarding the garage our floor was really dusty. If you split some mud you couldn't sweep it up without ending up in clouds of dust and as we don't have a big loft (town house that goes into the roof) we store stuff in there a lot.
The paint was special garage floor paint. It cost about £40-£45 for a big tin in Homebase, Focus and B&Q and does come in a range of colours. One big tin did a modern single garage floor, we had to do it in stage as we had to keep moving everything around to clear the floor! Walls are painted with Homebase basics white. We started with a heavy duty roller but actually a brush was better (the roller is now filled with little bits of breeze block!) much lighter now and a more usable room!
