  • yeah the queen of cupcakes! i dont beleive it either, it must have been exaggertated for being in the newspaper. she must have a good business, but that 14k just seems a bit crazy. i worked out that if i did as many markets as i could while in uni which is 11 a month, say i make £100 profit from each one, thats £1100 a month which is a full time wage, even while i'm at uni! i would be sooooooo happy if i could do that, but the farmers markets are £35 for the stall sooooo i'm not sure if £100 a day is too much to hope for

Hey everybody, haven't posted in a while! Nice to see so many people interested in cake baking!

Last week I had 2 cupcake orders one for 48 the other for 24! The 48 cupcake order was hard work... the baking part isn't so bad it's the decorating and preparation which seems to take forever!

Have decided to just bake by word of mouth as I'm going back to uni to do my diploma in architecture in september and It will be too much for me to try and run a business at the same time!

I'm really sorry to hear about disappointing outcomes with the EHO's it seem so strange that some areas are so strict on regulations, maybe you could work in a friend or family members kitchen... it's not ideal but, I hope that there's a way around it!
  • had another set back... i contacted the farmers markets about doing one in a few weeks when i am back from hols and the info i got back was that its £110 to use one of their stalls... plus £35. i dont see me ever making enough to profit from that... and i have no idea where i'd get my own market stall!!! i hoped that this would be something that i woulndt have to put too much money into, just in case it doesnt work out but now i'm thinking maybe it is... and i dont have much money!!! every time i get over one setback a new one arises!
  • You guys are all so brave!
I keep thinking about striking out on my own and taking baby steps but... still just baking for my mates ;)

I've got an imminent career break coming up (I work in a London-centric industry and am moving out of London, so... er... not really sure how to make money after February!)

I've put some photos up at www.facebook.com/jessbakescakes - what do you reckon? Could I do it? :O
  • Hi
Have come accross this post recently and have been reading through the pages. I have loved baking since I was little and I am making plans to turn this into a business. I'm booked on a cake decorating course in February and I am doing lots of practising. My cousin has also asked me to make decorated cookies for her wedding favours which I am really excited about so doing lots of practising for that too.
I have a question for Hayley11, I saw that you had asked your landlord for permission for the environmental health to come round and inspect your kitchen. I also need to ask my landlord and I need to ask if it is ok to run the business from home. My contract does say I am not allowed but a friends friend is an accountant and has said that that normally means for limited companies, which I wouldn't be. I just wondered how you went about asking your landlord?
    Hope you can help.

  • hi i think i can help with this one too... we asked our estate agent to ask our landlord and she said that there was no need and as its not like there will be people coming n going all day, its not a problem. our contract also says that we cant, so i made sure to get it in writing from her as well. if your landlord is reasonable then it shouldnt be a prob xx
  • Hi Stephy, that is fantastic news thanks! It won't be for a while yet that I ask but am planning ahead. Did you ask them by letter, I'm guessing it's best to have it all in writing? I wouldn't have anyone in the flat either. Did you have the environmental health round and have they allowed you to have your business regisetered at your address? Sorry for all the questions :)

    Hiya :)

I just rang him and explained that I would be baking from home, a few cakes a month (I hope), very small scale and wouldn't affect the property at all. He said as long as there were no adjustments or machinary fitted (as if! :rotfl:) and the kitchen wasn't full of stock then it was ok.

I can't see any landlord having a problem, I mean if you came in my kitchen, you wouldn't even know any different, I keep everything in cupboards.

I asked him before I did anything else though as I didn't want to waste my time if he did say no.

Hope yours says you can :)

  • Thanks for the info Hayley, I really hope they say yes. It's really encouraging to know that other peoples landlords are okay with it.:)
