is it easy to go self employed?
Registering as self employed is easy peasy, running a business is a completely different thing.
I'm in the process of setting mine up, basically i'm selling cakes to friends and family at cost price for the moment to build up my portfolio, i've only been making cakes since March. I'm also enrolling on a cake decorating course and a cupcake decorating course. I'm going to try and go on as many business related courses as I can (free ones!) to try to make it a success.

Good luck:heart: Think happy & you'll be happy

My landlord has given me his permission, yay! I'm going to wait til my mums dog goes home before I get the EHO round, they might be okay with one dog but not two! I'll give my kitchen a thorough clean from top to bottom, get my stock organised and hopefully they will say yes.
Have you all decided on business names? Or are you just doing it in your own name? I think i've decided on mine, i've registered the domain, facebook, blog and twitter page and i'm now waiting to get some cash then I can get a logo and website done. Oooh it's so exciting :j:heart: Think happy & you'll be happy

i have read it since i posted
i make cakes for family and a few friends, its mainly my mum that wants to set up a mini business as she does it aswell so i supose we will be doing it together .
the main thing it the health officer person coming round first of all then ?
choose business name /get website/facbook/business cards
register as self employed/fill in the exemption thing as not making lots of money
get selling ??
i think i know what we need to do now , its just actually doing it0 -
hey... to the poster who is also in liverpool, if u have the same guy you have NOTHING to worry about. basically i emailed environmental health on the liverpool city council website and they told me to ring this guy who deals with it, i think he did my area which is mossley hill... so not sure if you would have the same one but i'm guessing they all will have the same attitude as they are working the same council. he came round the next week and then bish bash bosh i was done
as for not feeling like you're good enough... i am in a constant battle with myself at the moment. i make my cakes, my boyfriend eats them, takes them into his work and gives them out and everyone says how nice they are. but when i take pictures of them and compare them to the pics on say Lola's Cupcakes.com i just get upset that mine will never look that good! i keep having to motivate myself
i go on holiday in three weeks, so i'm not really doing much till then except practicing and taking my rubbish pictures! i really want to do the markets as they work out perfectly for when my days off uni are when i go back. but i have the whole car problemi literally want just a 300 quid car to get to the market with, but my insurance is soooooo much. i wouldnt consider a loan or anything because the whole point of me doing this is to try and get out of debt quicker. i'm very business minded and very ambitoius when i get an idea in my head so i just have to suss out the car problem. theres no one who i can ask to drive me as the only person with a car is my housemate and he will not want to get up that early at weekends! plus he works full time. so i'm thinking of winning the lottery haha
the whole registering as self employed seems pretty simple, i have looked at the forms online and it doesnt look as daunting as you would think. also i think my partner can help me with that as he knows quite a bit about it because of his job0 -
stephy- try taking your pictures outside, you would be amazed at how much better they look. how much is taxi's in your area and how far is it to your nearest farmers market, what about hiring a car? you could write that off against your tax i would think as it was a necessary expense.

Stephy, I wish I hadn't looked at Lolas cupcakes!! They are amazing. Mine will never, ever be that good!
I'm doing quite well with my cake orders, had one already this month, 3 for next week and one the week after. Also got two for September so far.
I'm still charging cost but as i've informed the benefit office that i'm starting this, I can start charging "real" prices soon.
Thanks for the tip about taking the pictures outside Skint, mine always look way too dark. I do lighten them on my computer but you can tell it's not natural. Think happy & you'll be happy

hayley - you can also get daylight lightbulbs - dont have one but seemingly they are really good, and keep meaning to invest in one especially with the autumn looming and for all the christmas cake pictures.skintbint x

hi
thanks so much for the idea of renting a car! i was completely disallusioned about how much this cost but ive had a quote for £25 for a day!! even though im 22!! so the car is 25, and the stall is 35 at the farmers market. do people really make this much back? ive read that story about the lady who was going to be declared bankrupt so she baked and on her first market made £300... but i'm skeptical! anyway i'm going to spend all day baking and do some sums to work out prices and hopefully get some good pics out of it!!0 -

I think i've read that story too, the Queen of Cupcakes? I think the only thing I believe out of that story is her name :rotfl: I'm not saying she doesn't have a business but I refuse to believe it happens as they said.
In three months she made £14k? She would have had to sell like 7000 cupcakes. Nope not having it!
Have fun with your baking Stephy:heart: Think happy & you'll be happy
