parapusher wrote: »I am doing a cake school at a primary school Spring Fair on Friday afternoon. I was wondering if anyone knew what the usual price for cupcakes was these days? They are normal sized cakes (not mini or muffin), but are fancy ones with icing and decorations. It's many years since I've sold cakes on a stall, I usually do crafts but the insurance covers me for cakes as well. I have registered my kitchen with the council for food production, and have the food safety certificate.
I usually do Stalls with Novelty gifts for Christmas and bedding plants for the summer, I thought a cake stall would be a change and good to fill in the gaps.
Also, if anyone does a cake stall, how many cakes do you make?
Thank you
My cupcakes are inbetween normal ones and muffin size. I get the Dr Oetker cases from the Netherlands when I'm there. They are lovely bright colours and strong cases and they will be piped etc.
I have been looking and mostly cupcakes seem to go for £1.50 upwards. I was thinking of £1.25 but still not sure lol. How much do you guys sell cake pops for?
I would also appreciate advice on how many to make. I was thinking of 4 doz cup cakes, 24 large pieces of gingerbread, 12 (or 24 if I get time) pieces of lemon drizzle and hopefully some cake pops. It is a two hour sale, so not a huge amount of selling time. I have also done a load of flyers to hand out.SPC 8 (2015) #485 TOTAL: £334.65
SPC 9 (2016) #485 TOTAL £84
SPC 10 (2017) # 485 TOTAL: £464.80

Thank you for the information. My cases are the dotted ones from Sainsburys, they seemed to be about the same size as the Dr Oetker ones there, but I prefered the colours.
I was thinking 75p each - so should be ok then! My Mum thought anything over 50p wouldn't sell.
I thought maybe 100 - 120 cakes. As a guide, I sold 60 lucky dips at their Christmas Fayre (toys), there are less people at the Spring Fair, but the parents will like cakes as well as the kids! I will have some boxes, in case anyone wants to take some home.0 -

I think it depends on the rules of the individual boot sale. Many charge food suppliers e.g. icecream vans, hot dog vans, a large fee not just what they charge people with car boots - and these suppliers wouldn't be happy if their customers were buying food to eat from the 'boots' who hadn't paid the extra fee. Also, one that I go to, sometimes have their own refreshment stand selling tea & cakes and they don't want to lose income either.
I have seen people with a few cakes for sale though, and thought, like you, that it would be a place to sell any that were left. I would package them up, I have some clear cupcake containers, and sell them like that i.e. intended to buy to take home, not to eat on the day. This would also be good for hygiene, as Boot sales tend to be 'grubby' places.0 -

You could always see if the ice cream men and hot food suppliers would be interested in buying cakes from you to sell on. It shouldn't be too much of a hard sell if they're aware of what's going on in their industry after all there are loads of people selling handmade home baked cakes now (this thread is proof of that) so getting them to buy from you should be fairly simple and it would mean a steady income stream for the bootfair season say April to September.0 -
Well, in the end I didn't do the boot sale because I sold virtually everything last night :j. Had about 10 cupcakes and some gingerbread left so I was well pleased with that. Sold the cupcakes for £1.15 to test the water, but will prob up it to £1.25. Got loads of flyers out as well and chatted to people. Very nice evening.

Thank you to everyone who gave me advice on cake prices. I settled on between 30p for smaller ones with 100s & 1000s on the top, to 75p for lemon meringue ones which have lemon curd in the middle & topped with a meringue. Only sold about half of the ones I took, but this was because there was hardly any customers! The school only charged £5 instead of £10 for the table, I think some of the stalls didn't sell anything, but I did make £20 profit, so that was a help and I have plenty of cakes in the freezer to last for next few weeks! I have a picture of my cakes on my blog, on the Lynne's Cakes page , I tried to add it to this message but it came out huge.0
