    Karen,

Would it not be easier to work out a "whole party" cost plus a per head cost for the cakes used? So you could cost your time, materials, travel etc and then add on a cost per head to decorate 6 cakes each or 12 cakes each. Colleges pay around £22 per hour to tutors so if you based you charges on this, what sort of figures would that give you?

Also have you googled cupcake decorating courses? They might give a starting point for charging if you can find a short, half day course to compare yourself with!

    I hope that this helps,

    Good luck!

thanks for replying, the lady in question thought i could do it for £3 a head..... i know someone who charges £25 a head and Mums who Bake in Milton Keynes charge £40, understandably i told her to go away and think again !!!

I had a similar enquiry a couple of weeks ago , the person wanted me to provide the venue (which would have involved me hiring a suitable venue) and 2 hours cake decorating for 10 people (me to provide all equipment and cakes etc) for less than £100  I said sorry I wouldnt be able to cover my costs at that price !
I did a little research and £25 - £50 per head seems the norm .

It seems some people expect you to give your time for free ;)

So I posted on here last week and have just recently got the cupcake bug and even considering setting up a business, the time isn't quite right for me at the moment, 3 chn 4 and under!! Anyway I am going to start experimenting with all sorts of cakes and take pics and build a portfolio. I have made various birthday cake sponges and basic xmas cakes. I currently have a fruit cake waiting to be decorated for my parents ruby anniversary next month. I am going to start a blog with all my pics and updates. I have a few questions for all you cake makers.
1.Saw a malteser cake on an earlier post, does anyone have the recipe or know where I can get hold of it.
2.Does buttercream icing keep, made some earlier and have some left over, I have put it in the fridge and was going to experiment piping with it, just wondering whether it will be still edible?? If so how long for??
    3. Ingredients, are there any suppliers out there for big bags of flour/ sugar etc or do you all get your stuff from local supermarket?

I will leave the questions there for now and look forward to hearing your responses.
    Thanks in advance
    Ruth

What planet are these people on???? I know we all like a bargain but come on.....

Karen, I'm so glad to hear that you value your time and expect to be paid for it. So often small businesses ( including home business's ) don't cost their time well and are undercharging as a result. We must value our skills!!!

I love this thread, even though I only make cakes for fun and my friends. Off to buy the ingredients for Irish Coffee cupcakes this morning, I need 36 of them for a friend's party this week! Yum, yum, in fact the well known "Irish cream" is all I have in stock!

Here's a cake I finished yesterday for my friends son who is 26 this week. Everything is edible and the tiles on the cake board spell out people/things etc which are special to him :)
