From my experience it all depends on which part of the country you are from. My council, just wont allow me to do it, plain and simple. Other councils sign off without even looking at premises. First thing is find out what the council is like where you are moving too, but also the letting agents should be able to tell you. There are a few on here who have private lets and do it from home, some own there house. But you no point in even bothering if the local council says no. Hope this helps you a bit.
PS its not all doom and gloom, a lot on here are living their dream, and its wonderful
Hello Esmer
Thanks for your reply. I didn't realise it was up to the council, I thought it was just down to the landlord and then the EH. Unless, I'm confused and you actually mean EH department of the council? Either way, it seems harsh that your council just plain refused you. Did they even give you a reason or inspect your kitchen?
Did you find a way around it? I hope you find a way to do your cakes at home too!0 -
You can run this business from a home, i'm certain all the people on this thread are doing exactly that.
We live in a rented flat, our LL is a solicitor and he said it was absolutely fine. It's not a commercial property, it's a residential property.
My advice would be to ring the environmental health for the area you are planning on moving (or even just looking) get an idea of how flexible they are, like Esmer said, some are really horrid and won't let you whereas some are great and will let you no questions asked.
Then I would speak to the LL of the property you are looking at them, explain that you OH is wanting to make a few cakes in her spare time to sell, I can't imagine why a LL would have a problem with this but i'm sure some will.
I think some of the information you've been given has led you to believe it's quite complicated running a bakery business from home and it isn't.
Good luck
Hi Hayley. Thanks very much for your reply!
I'm glad to hear that it's not as complicated as I've been led to believe and hope we get some green lights pretty soon.
It's looking like Haringey will the local council for the area we're looking to move to. If I contact them and explain we'll be moving soon, my girlfriend will be selling cakes she bakes from home and ask how we can arrange an Environmental Health inspection, if they tell me straight away how to arrange it, I'll assume that they aren't gonna cause too many problems for her!
We're gonna send emails to every letting agency we can find explaining that we're moving in a few months, we like their flats but we need landlords permission up-front to bake cakes from home before we waste time viewing flats that may later turn out to be unsuitable for us if the LL says no. It seems the most direct way of getting exactly what we need from an agency but I also think it could scare a few agencies off as they won't want the extra hassle, and it's easier to just say no than to go checking up with landlords.
Any tips of a softly, softly way to approach them without frightening them off?
Again, thanks to everyone for reading and replying. This thread is full of motivational material!:beer:0 -

The EH work out of my council, so one of the same. No they do not encourae home bakers to sell cakes. Said that I could do parties for friends and family but I cant sell them. My work has got mega busy now and it pays well, so I just do it when I can for friends and family. They love the cakes

Was just looking round ebay and there's a shop selling any 6 sugar flair colours for £11.75 with free p&p, works out at £1.95 each which isn't bad. I pay £1.75 from the local shop but the shop in the next town over charges £2.30.
Link to listing. (forgot this, doh!)
Will share a picture later of a castle cake I made today because i'm quite impressed with it:heart: Think happy & you'll be happy

Yippeee Env Health came round today and I am ok to start selling :j. I just have to do fridge temps for the days I bake to sell and keep a log of where I buy ingredients from. Now need to get baking and get DH to take some photos:D.
Hayley11: I bought my last lot of colours from this ebay seller last week. They worked out much cheaper than I could get them locally. They arrived pretty quickly too, about two days after I paid.SPC 8 (2015) #485 TOTAL: £334.65

Hi,
Can anyone help me please? I have been asked if i would like to sell my home made cakes (would be cupcakes, flapjacks, fruitcake and banana cake if i do) at a craft sale. I have only ever made them for friends and family before. It will be a one off event, do i need to get my food hygiene certificate? Is there anything else i need? I've read various things on the internet so i'm confused. I can seei have to register with EH and have my certificate if i start a business, but there's different conflicting information about one off/occasional sales. Can anyone advise me? I dont want to get in trouble.
