Some tips please if you don't mind? :)

I've been asked to make a cake for my friends dads birthday. He's a handy man so I'm thinking bricks, mortar and trowel.....I have no idea where to start though. He wants a chocolate sponge, which is fine, I can do that, but apart from that I have never done a cake like this before.

    Help! :) xx

The easiest way is to "google" for ideas. Search for "handy man cake" and you'll have 1.490.000 results - so, I guess, plenty to choose from.
I would do a figurine making a brick wall; the brick wall made from one block and I would made the lines to define the bricks with a knife and the mortar with icing. Or you can do tools etc etc.

We are waiting to see your master piece. Good luck!! :)

I would possibly cut a cake into rectangles, ice them in a brick colour (and texture using a mat/roller, as suggested) and you can sandwich them with buttercream to look like the mortar...

I would probably use pastillage to make the trowel, as it sets so firm

I'm not expert though, just what I would try....

    Good luck :)

Can you tell me more about the BSG membership, polkadot? Do you find it useful (other than for the insurance!)?

I actually dont use the insurance...but yes,I find it very useful.Branch meetings vary in activity depending on the time of year.Foe example we're preparing for the Brighton exhibition in May.We also have demonstrators and workshops...and of course the very useful message board. We have some very talented members from all over the world who are very generous with their knowledge.

For those that have set up their business and advertising their services - Do you do character cakes? With all the copyright issues around reproducing a character or logo Im unsure as to risk it or not!

I will point out first that I really don't know about this, but my instict would be that producing them on request to fulfil an order would be fine, but I would just be wary of advertising them...

It seems to have gone a little quiet in here. How's everyone getting along? :)
