is this not where the @ would be on a US Keyboard and therefore mean its a US keyboard rather than a UK one with US settings?

Maybe she has the Argos edition?

Oh dear!! Now I know why so many people leave tech support within the first couple of years!!
sorry if I'm missing something here but

    Uk keyboard lay out

    US keyboard lay out

From what the OP has said they notebook has the US keyboard not the UK one, which for a 10 year old isn't exactly ideal. It's not a tech issue but as not as described issue IMO

you know you aren't the only person to work in IT, I also do and one of the most basic things to remmeber is read/listen to the user, don't make the assumption that no one else knows what they are talking about, the op has the keyboard in front of her and can see how it is physically laid out

I think the OP is a bit confused.

Where is the @ symbol printed on your keyboard?
'on the 2 key with shift key'

Might be better with, have you got a £ sign??

I can see where the op is coming from. It is fitted with a US keyboard and for a young child it could be confusing when they use other computers. Not the end of the world for many people. Also explains why people get stressed when talking to computer help desks !!

    Should read 'if';)

Unless it was described as coming with a UK keyboard layout it's not a 'not as described issue' but purely a setup issue and it's not all that confusing for a 10 year old - mac keyboards are generally laid out in that way I believe.
