Thanks Mrs M
I'm with you - 'fraid I couldn't tell you if it was Foggy or not - but Barry Sheene - that was a different story! ... potters off to see if she can find a cross stitch of Barry Sheene!
Thanks for the great idea!
ooh look what I found: http://www.wye.co.uk/view/Cross_Stitch/Lyndisfarne_Cross_Stitch/Superbikes_by_Lyndisfarne/
(will only be of interest to anyone that knows anything about motorbikes!)
oh no - now I've found classic bikes .... http://www.wye.co.uk/view/Cross_Stitch/Lyndisfarne_Cross_Stitch/Classic_Bikes_by_Lyndisfarne/
decisions - btw - anyone used the site?
Some bikers hiding here, too?I've had a PINN cross stitch kit of bike as a UFO for ages. It's quite close to being finished, but the thread aren't with the chart-or was it that the chart wasn't with the fabric???-anyway, it's not all in one place, so I should have a look and finish it off.
I was at the bike show at the Excel in London yesterday. Had a sit on a Rocket III. My goodness-it's HUGE!!! I love it, but I'm so short that my feet couldn't reach the gear lever or the back brake. :rotfl:
DH is calling me, telling me my bath is ready, so I'm off to have a soak in the tub...
Oh-I haven't used the Wye website, but I have been to the shop in Bakewell. Lovely place. Staff were very nice too.Cross Stitch Cafe Monthly Challenge Member #27

Hi Chickywiggle and Shelley
I think I will give the site a call and order over the phone will let you know what it is like0 -
I have a question for you all.....how do you anchor/secure a thread when you are just starting it....like wise when finishing a thread?
I ask because I think the back of my work is quite messy with lots of little tails on it....not that it matters I guess because once framed no one can see it....but today when having my palaver moment I found a way of securing a thread when first using it that I am definately going to try tomorrow and it seems very tidy!
I'm not usually one for reading instructions but the little gem of info was with the poundland kits.
Usually I pull the thread through to the front from the back, hold onto a small tail and as I do a few crosses I sew over the tail so that its hidden under the stitches.
When finishing a thread I thread the needle under a few stitches on the back and snip off so that the tail is under the stitches.
The new way for me to start a thread is this.....take a single strand and fold it in half so that one end has 2 seperate ends and the other end has a loop. Go through to the front from the back and on the back hold the loop. Go back through the fabric on the diagonal (as you would when making the first half of the x stitch) and instead of stitching over the loop (like you would a tail) you thread you needle through the hoop which kind of makes a knot.
That way there are no loose tail ends and no way for the stitch to come loose!
I have never heard of this way of securing the first stitch....though had I actually read any of the instructions that comes with a kit I might have done
Have any of you heard of it...or in fact do any of you do it?
I can't wait to try it tomorrow!:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -
Shelly - I have been starting my stitching like that for years now, there is a name for it...I'm trying to remember......
Edited: 'Loop Method', that's it.
See, it's the sort of thing you kind of assume everyone is already doing, so no one bothers to mention it. But now you have, maybe others who aren't doing it may find it easier to useCross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. I always do it this way. then to finish the thread i just run it under some of the ones on the back.loves how my "I've been censored" signature has been censored. LOL. Happy Christmas. :xmastree:0 -
I use the loop method also but I only found out about it half way through my current ufo so I have tails and loops on the back of mine lol
it is soooo much easier to do the loop though, once you've done the first stitch you dont have to worry about catching the tail with the next 4 or 5 stitches.
I didn't get to spend as much time as I wanted stitching yesterday so only did 3 hours, but I did a part of the chart that was really bold so it looks like I did loads :rotfl:
unfortunately I'm back to work today so enjoy your stitching day to all those who get to stay at home....i am so jealous !0 -
I also use the loop method to start, and run the end under some stitch backs to finish. It took me a few years of stitching to discover the loop method for starting, though now I know it I wouldn't go back.
It would be really interesting to see some pics of the back of some peoples work. I haven't got time to take one now but I'll try and upload a front and back picture of mine next time I do an update (soon, I promise)0 -
I use the loop method for starting a piece of stitching, but it would be great if someone could come up with a similar method of neatly finishing off a thread :T

I knew I'd be the last to know :rotfl::rotfl:
Though like Louise said, it's the kind of thing you think everyone does.....kind of like having your stitches all go the same way....so no-one mentions it
I found it purely by chance yesterday by reading the instructions that came with the poundland kits. I really will have to read instructions from now on though, never know what I might learn.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. ohhhh no you weren't -I found out about it about ooohhh 3 mins ago-then had to look it up to see what you meant
...I don't think I would get on with it as I would probably keep dropping the needle off the thread
I do the hold the thread for a couple of stitches and sew over it..
I was planning on trying a new way when I start the next one..... where you knot the thread and start by going through the fabric a few stitches away from where you are starting so the knot is on the front -then when you have added enough Xs to fasten it in then you snip the knot off the front ...
To fasten off I just run the needle through a couple of stitches.
The back of my work isn't very neat...my mum on the other hand makes the back and the front almost identical
I got a fair bit done yesterday and Im hoping on getting plenty done today..so I will get off and make a start..
have a great day everyone-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50
