Anyone not going to buy anything in the sales and avoid them

I use to be a sucker for sales but I've realised I was buying things I didn't need and that I wouldn't even had notice when it was full price.
So my plans for 2010 are to lose weight and have a baby so I'll need every penny I've got.
I may have to keep away from MSE though because it's full of tempting offers!!!Third time lucky on WW I hope :j

Not really a fan of the sales so I will not be going into any shops for the forseeable future.0

I don't shop in the sales after Christmas these days as we never have any money left! And using my credit card in the past is what got me into trouble:mad:. There's nothing I need right now, just things I want...but I will look out for reduced Christmas cards/wrapping paper, and maybe a new table lamp in the Laura Ashley sale using the money I received for Christmas. I won't be rushing to the shops for a few days yet though. Grabbits are great for all year round bargains so I'll be building up a stash of pressies through the year with any luck.0

what a good idea! I'm going to do this too. I have enough shampoo etc to last five years I reckon. I've been browsing the online sales but no one shop had enough that I wanted to qualify for free delivery and there is no way I'm braving the crowds. I need to consolidate what I've got, especially in the food cupboards and bathroom, stuff is stashed all over the place. If I wrote out a stock list it would be scary!Casperthefriendlyghost wrote: »I've set myself a challenge to buy as little as possible this coming year including emptying the fridge, freezer, storecupboards and the masses of toiletries in my bathroom cupboard!

I like to do the sales at the tail end. I`ve had many great bargains from M&S and Debenhams. Granted its all stuff I don`t really need but I`m not spending much.0

I'm a recent sales convert, i used to have the idea that if i didn't want it full price i don't need it now but that has changed, i will only spend available funds though, no credit.
On deals such as house hold (towels/bedding/ kitchen ware) and definatley fashion as the season is still young when sales occur so I spend less pre sale and more after on stuff that ill stand the test of time, like cashmere sweaters, smart black trousers etc....
Many of the grabbits like the boots thread for half price gift sets, christmas novelties or other stuff i already have or really don't need I do ignore
I'm think i'm quite savvy, but do get suckered occasionally0 -
I have a sales budget and a list of the kinds of things I would like and as long as I stick to that I will be fine. Mind you I hate all the bustle so I tend to sale shop from the couch and hit the real shops when the last dregs of the sales are all thats left.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Oh, me too. I don't go near the shops till after New Year and only go to Monsoon/Accessorize when it's 70% off. I love their stuff but am disciplined to only shop there at the end of the sales!!!
For everything else, I literally have a 'wish list' of stuff from various stores and don't bother just browsing around endlessly. I love online shopping, it is so easy to find your faves quickly and just buy them from the comfort of the couch... then there is the excitement of waiting for the parcel to come!
I was on New Look's website yesterday, bought quite a bit of stuff that I already wanted at 50-70% off, including a few things I bought at full price (and haven't yet worn) before Christmas which I will return when I get my sale delivery! So I'll have saved about £40 just by doing that, plus all the other discounts, plus Quidco which is currently tracking at 10% rather than 8% as advertised! I also got some great Oasis bargains the other day plus 22% off plus Quidco, it was all stuff I'd already wanted. Same with Boots, got some fab pressie bargains yesterday and a few nice S&G bits for me - although I could do with a little restraint in the smellies department!!!! :rotfl:
So, apart from Monsoon/Accessorize and possibly Clarks, I am not even looking at the other sales. (probably)

I buy things I need, when I can afford them. I don't buy stuff that the shops need to get rid of, or have price established in a couple of branches to roll out "half price" deals for the sale.
I've worked in retail for about 8 years and back then, the sale was a genuine drive to clear out old stock. Now it's just a shift in perceived value to drive more sales. I suppose there will be some outlets that actually have a "sale", maybe clothing shops and a couple of others.
Good point, well made.
It used to be a tradition in our house that we went to the post Christmas sales, but to be honest, they're so poor (and fake) now it's hardly worth bothering. Places like Homebase and Debenhams make me laugh with their sales - the same stuff they always have at the same prices they always sell them at, except it has a sticker on saying x% off. Debenhams in particular always have the same Anolon pans reduced in every sale, even to the point where the boxes are pre-printed with the discount flash!
I have and will be checking some of the online sales for stuff that I've been looking for before but decided I don't want to pay full price - things like games and books. I might also be tempted into some clothes or shoes as I need some stuff for work, but other than that, probably nothing.
As most people have said, I tend to buy when I need something and usually start to look around for it before I need it and keep an eye on prices. The internet is a wonderful thing these days - you can pretty much get an instant idea of the "real" price for something and what's a good deal, rather than what a shop says it is.0 -
I have a list of things to buy in the sale - jumpers, coat and microwave - and I'm avoiding going to the shops. Have done it all online. But do have to go to Argos to collect my Chocolate oranges. What price will I pay?I wanna be Mortgage Free by February 20130
