I'm going to approach the head in September about professional cleaning but I know budget is tight :(

... and I'm going to see if others can smell it so that I know it's not just me!

This classroom was supposed to be a stop gap for a year until my new one was built... but that went down the spout with the budget cuts
  • Sounds like it's in the underlay. A professional cleaner can advise - for example they can use an ozone machine that will zap everything in the room, they are used by salvage teams after house fires to get rid of smoke smells. A last resort would be to cut out the soiled area and patch it with 'donor' carpet from an unused part (eg, from under a large piece of furniture). This is also a professional job.

My DH is a site agent at a lower school and cleans the carpets there; They have their own carpet cleaning machine.
If your site agent can't do anything try urine neutraliser from pets at home or order some dry foam carpet cleaner from county supplies
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Unfortunately we are a small school so no caretaker etc to ask for help but will try the urine neutraliser from pets at home - thanks ButterFlyBrain

have you thought about using vinegar? i have found it does the trick...

I too have found white vinegar works for this. Once dry I usually also finish off by sprinkling the area with baking soda, rub in and vaccuum up after a half hour or so.

Who does the cleaning? This can't be a new problem in a school!! The cleaner may know a trick or two!!
Go hopefully into each new day, enjoy something from every day no matter how small, you never know when it will be your last

er - my mum was a school cleaner for years - and over the summer holidays gave the school a thorough clean - including carpeted areas. this was a good few years ago. you should not have to work in a classroom which smells of pee. you have a few weeks to sort this. its NOT your responsibilty for one............you need to tell the headmaster and the caretaker that the classroom smells. and then tell them you expect it to be cleaned by 'such a date' when you will be getting ready for the new intake.
  • I sympathise with you. Went into school on the Monday after closed Friday and found a cat had somehow got in but not got out. Downside is the classroom smells of cat pee and pooh upside ...its not my classroom:j
