I found some foot deodorant and sprayed it in my ancient but so comfortable sheepskin slippers and then hung them on the washing line for a couple of days. They now smell clean again!
Too comfortable and worn in to my foot shape to throw away. Very MSE.
(I have checked the soles and they're OK, no safety issues there!)
when the weather goes back to normal I'll be wearing them again.

Does anyone have any experience of UV-C shoe deodorisers? The theory is that the UV kills the bacteria which creates the smell in the first place (sweat is odorless apparently). Amazon sell a couple of makes but I can't find anyone with personal experience of this.
