For effective spam filtering you can use K9 from http://www.keir.net/k9.html for POP3 accounts in Outlook Express or SpamBayes from http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/ for full MS Outlook.
Both statistically analyse incoming messages for similarity to your identified ham and spam messages. This is far more effective than the "rules" approach taken by MailWasher. Takes a week or two to train them but after that the results are amazing. I have an e-mail address that has been kicking around for five years so I get all spam known to man and they rarely miss.
Best of all, they are both completely free0 -
How I wish I'd seen this before subscribing to Broadband last month! My firewall on Windows XP is rubbish and now my computer is infected! I'm at screaming pitch with it.

Terrific post Debeast
I have downloaded those files you suggest (already had Grisoft - excellent!).

Hi all great post, have installed Kerio and Spybot successfully but having trouble with Grisoft. tried opening direct, saving to desktop and running from there. Both ways I click SETUP and get this message
C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll initialization. ???
Thus forcing me to close the application, I have searched my c drive and found S32EVNT1.DLL in C:\WINX\system32
Can anybody help me please??????

You keep em up to date by just running there webupdate functions just set aside 1/2 an hour every fortnite to do them.
With grisoft and kerio you can set them to update by themselves. But spybot and adaware i think you have to manually do.
As for the error with C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL have you uninstalled your previous virus checker first? If you want specific help them post full system software specs.-34k to 0 from september '05

Hi
I originally posted this on the 'check your machines thread in the techie bit but so far no replies so does anyone else have any comments/suggestions on this...
I have Norton Antivirus pro 2003, spybot, ad-aware and ZoneAlarm free version. I run them regular. I went to the Norton free security check here http://www.symantec.com/region/reg_eu/product/nis_index.html
and this shows me to have 3 open ports(all the others stealth) and one trojan horse vulnerability. This is just the security part I checked... I got worried so I checked the ports they stated as open in the 'Shields Up' site mentioned here hoping that they would advise me on how to deal with it and they all came out Stealth... mmm What do you think?Thanx

try using a diff firewall such as kerio or sygate they are both v good at hiding ports-34k to 0 from september '05

What I really meant was the difference that norton checker said the ports were open and when I tested them all individually on the shields up site they came out stealth. Everything else was all stealth and well covered... not sure I'd want to change my firewall really although I would consider it. I just dont understand the contrast in the two checkers, a complete contrast. Could it be Norton trying to get me to upgrade? I'm on norton av 2003 professionalThanx

Without knowing exactly how both pages scripts are checking your ports it's hard to answer this question. It could be either of the scripts misreporting your ports.
Try a 3rd site to analyse your comp (sorry i don't know any but try google) and if it says ports are stealthed then don't worry-34k to 0 from september '05
