Personally if you are on broadband I wouldnt bother with software firewalls, you are better off buying a router with firewall. Much more secure and your Desktop/Laptop IP address will be masked to the evils lurking in the internet.
The other problem with software firewalls is that they are very heavily memeory intensive. The makers will tell you otherwise, but its a pack of lies. My desktop PC, a albeit very slow one, used to have Nortons Systemsworks (includes Norton's Antivirus) and Nortons Firewall. Protection was ok, but but my PC ran like a dog and sometimes experienced problems..ie.lock ups/received spyware/etc.
Bought a D-link 108mpbs wireless/wired router with NAT Firewall. Uninstall the Firewall and installed the router (childs play).
PC now runs a hell of alot faster and no problems so far.
In fact wired routers with Firewall are CHEAPER than some software firewalls. Mine was £85 3 months ago (which you can now get cheaper), but that includes the premium for wireless capability.
nb. in my expereince most companies use 'hardware' firewalls - ie. network routers with firewall capabilityThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Hi
I've posted elsewhere about the major problems I had when I upgraded to Zonealarm 5.0 but thought I'd better post again here for those who have requested email notification of updates to this topic
see the reviews at download.com:

If you have 4.5 Don't upgrade!!!0 -
Hi All
I thought i'd grace you all with my vast wisdom ;) on the area of internet security. It is a good money saving tip if you can avoid those nasty dialers, cut down on stupid ads and basically enjoy the freedom of the internet and its fruits (such as this site)
There are 4 main programs you need for complete security and peace of mind.
1:- A Firewall
I use Kerio (http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html) as its free for home use and doesn't contain loads of spyware like ZoneAlarm. Windows XP firewall is no good DO NOT rely on it you have been warned
2:- A trojan/Dialer/Spyware Detector
I use Spybot (http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10194058.html?tag=lst-0-1) for this. It's a little more advanced than just a dector it actually can activly prevent malicious scripts from running on web pages and much more.
3:- A virus Checker
Sound obvious i know but worth having. I use Grisoft (http://www.grisoft.com) as its free and easy to use with regular updates.
4:- An Ad scanner
Lots of programs have hidden adware/spyware which can be annoying to say the least. You can remove the ads by using a program like Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) This is a lot like Spy bot and between them NOTHING gets left behind.
All the programs i use are FREE and if you keep them up to date you will never have a problem. The advice is offered free of charge and in good faith, i accept no responcibility for the programs themselves and am in no way connected with any of them
Hope this helps

Help
I had Norton Anti virus loaded on my pc (XP operating system) and everything was ok. I now decided to replace it with McAfee Security Suite , which firstly asked me to uninstall Norton's which I did.
However when it was fully loaded it doesn't allow me to use the internet as it says it cannot locate the search engine.
Only when I uninstall the firewall can i use the internet.
I have tried Mcafee's customer support but it does nothing- i have even reconfigured my ISP connection still nowt.
Can anyone please help.
I know this post is posted elsewhere on other forums but I need help!Mark Hughes' blue and white army0 -

Have you had a careful look at the firewall settings? I don't know the McAfee one but if it is similar to others you might have to alter settings to allow internet access. If your internet connection is working ok without the firewall it must be something to do with it. Also have you completely removed all traces of Norton? It might be worth doing a search for it (and other files you know are connected with it) - perhaps it is causing a conflict. (?)Torgwen.....................

Hi all
.
Having setup which ever firewall you use it is a good idea to check that "it is doing what it says on the tin" the best site for this is Steve Gibsons site https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 you'd be surprised at some of the results.
Steve also has a wealth of security related stuff on his site , from articles detailing a denyal of service attack on his site by a couple of 13 yearolds!! http://www.grc.com/dos/grcdos.htm to revealing the extent of security holes in certain operating systems. Worth checking out his site https://www.grc.com
Was checking out Metronet for broadband info and came across some links about Steve Gibson and grc.com which I thought may be of interest since a few people have mentioned the web site on this thread.

After the new newsletter I clicked the free Protection link and downloaded the Spybot to block adware ( I have already got AVG free), but it is not free. When i came to the stage of having to register it wanted a "One off " payment0
