Co-op's own brand of powder also goes rock hard in the drawer with a cold fill machine.

If you put the powder into the drum do you put it in before the clothes or heap it on top of them afterwards? - Just wondered if it would all fall through the holes in the drum otherwise.

The water goes in the drum and falls through the holes too!. It doesn't empty the water/soap mix until the drain/pump is engaged to I think it would be ok whatever way you used it.

My machine is a water saving thingy so I don't think it would dissove well in mine.:(

I really can't understand why we can't have a basic 'no frills' washing machine with hot and cold fill a good spin and simple programmes instead of all this techno wonk stuff? My washer can pilot the space shuttle.

So true, mine has about 10 different wash options of which I only ever seem to use 2!

I have made it may aim to try some different ones in light of this lol....am liking the 'baby' cycle at the moment (though none of us are babies- DS is 3.5 at the youngest lol!).

  • Does anyone know whether Sainsbury's cheap powder goes hard in the drawer like the Tesco stuff? I plan to do an online order and I'm wondering whether it's worth buying some of their powder.
  • I had this problem with the latest bag of powder, wouldn't go down the dispenser drawer and set hard as rock! I emailed customer services to complain, following day I got a phone call apologising and a £4 voucher the day after. I couldn't take the powder back to the store as I'd emptied the bag into an old big box of Persil. Always worth complaining.

Hi Sueinbirmingham, I had no probs with Sainsbury's Basics cheapie but made the mistake of buying a cheap brand from there called Daisy. Never again, it was useless, but by the time I realised I'd decanted the powder into a plastic tub and recycled the packaging. I cut it with Surf, for which I happened to have a voucher, and got rid of it that way.

Wow! You are a REALLY good friend! :T
Thanks ;) Mr Lidl inconsiderately set up shop a mile away. It's truly amazing what you can transport on a pushbike if you have to!

I mix my powders - tesco value, a better one such as bold and washing soda. I found that if I left the washing soda out then it all clogged and also my machine began to smell. The washing soda seems to make the difference
We don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.

I had a problem with my washer last year; it stopped mid-cycle full of water. Drained it and investigated the trap; not a sausage. Then I took off the outlet hose for the side spur which joined the kitchen sink drain and it was blocked with a grey-white putty which I can only assume was semi-solid washing powder. It reeked, too. Got it out of the pipework and out of the hose, problem sorted. Thought you might want to share some top tips which I got from a washing machine mechanic of long experience:

    1. Anti-limescale products are a waste of time and money.
    2. Liquid detergents clog up the works.
    3. Machines can be totally disabled by a wire from an underwired bra; they can work loose and go thru the holes in the drum.
    4. Machines do eat odd socks and other small items; they can get around the back of the drum. Mesh laundry bags will prevent this.
    5. Pile the laundry loosely (no tamping down) into the drum. When it's halfway up, that's enough. If you overload, you'll strain the motor, damage the clothes, end up with powder residue on them and shorten the life of the machine.
    6. Occasionally, run your machine empty and detegent free on its hottest cycle to give it a good clean.
