Hi OrkneyStar, interesting post. I bought my current washer late in 2005, did lots of research inc Which? mags at the library, and all the machines were cold-fill only. Can you buy ones which do hot fill as well? Incidentally, has anyone out there used Lidl's "Formil" washing powder and how well did it perform for you?
I love the Formil stuff. Find its gets clothes nice and clean, no residue. Don't need as much as the box says.0 -

I'm glad I read this thread as I've just run out of Tesco powder, although I generally use it for the pet bedding and use Eco balls for our stuff. I'm currently using up a bag of soda crystals that I've had hanging around for awhile but I'm not sure what to use next :think:0

Hit Lidl's yesterday and their pallet of giant 100-wash Formil powder was down to just 10 on the shelf, two of which went home with me on the pushbike. 19 kg of soap powder (one for me and one for a friend). Lol
Got to use up the current stuff then onto the Formil, it's got an expiry date of Aug 2012 on the top. Didn't know washing powder had a use-by date. Does anybody out there knows what happens to super-annuated powder and the science behind it?

It is designed to be attached to a cold inlet so attaching it to a hot one instead is not a very good idea. Do hot fill ones not have a hot and a cold attachment, whereas the new cold fill ones only have a cold attachment ? A hot inlet only would make for problems when cold water was needed (to cool the hot water to lower temps etc).

Found this, suggesting it is a bad idea for washing machines.
This suggests it is less clear cut for dishwashers.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Thanks PigPen, that's a neat idea. I'm thinking it would mean that my laundry would be committed to whatever temperature my tap-water came off the system at, which might be too hot and ruin some items? Or am I missing something? GreyQueen I have posted a link about this above (general consensus is bad idea with WM, not so clear cut with DW).

It would also mean all rinses are hot too , usually cold, which would rack up the bill I would imagine.0 -
Co-op's own brand of powder also goes rock hard in the drawer with a cold fill machine.
If you put the powder into the drum do you put it in before the clothes or heap it on top of them afterwards? - Just wondered if it would all fall through the holes in the drum otherwise.2013: Interflora Vouchers, Christmas Decorations, NNUK goody bag, thermos flask, macwet gloves0
