The soda crystals - is it a tsp per wash? Is it to make the powder go further? I'm sure I've read about it on other threads but have never been quite sure how much to add and why.

    Hi.
When i 'made' my own washing powder, i used 3kg of a 'nice' powder, 3kg of a cheapie powder, and 3kg (thats 3bags) of washing soda.Mixed it all up in a great big container i had that had a lid, then i just put 2tablespoons of the mix in a wash ball into the machine.
So i suppose you could use 1tablespoon of washing powder mixed with 1tablespoon of washing soda, straight into the washer.
I made my 'powder' at the beginning of April, cost about £8 i think, and i haven't even used a quarter of it yet! :D

Hope you don't mind, I have a quick question - I noticed that my local Pound shop has the 2 in 1 powder, but it's their 'own brand', and wondered if anyone had tried it - do you think it would be any good?
£160 in £2 coins saved so far!

I always use own brand value, or my mum will bring an obscure 'own brand' 2 in 1 that she has found at the local discount store for me, and everything comes out fine. I like to hang my washing outside, so i dont find i need a powder that smells of anything in particular as i end up with that 'outside' smell. I think you only need to be careful if someone in your family has problem skin. Saying that, i suffer fom very sensitive skin (have to be very careful what i use make up wise) and have never had a reaction from any washing powder, apart from Ariel donkeys years ago!!!!

This is what I'm doing too, and it's working a treat. My current mixture is 3kgs Bold, 3kgs Morrison's 'Bettabuy' and 3 bags washing soda crystals. I use 50mls for a full load and put it in the drum with the laundry. Results are indistinguishable from previously when I used the manufacturers recommended dose (150 mls - ridiculous, Pah!). I've also stopped using fabric softener as a matter of routine. I hand rinse underslips and tights in a bowl with a small amount of fabric softener, but everything else is fine without. I live in a soft water area so vinegar isn't necessary either.

Can I ask what the vinegar does. I always used fabric conditioner but just ran out so suggestions welcome!

Sure. If you live in a hard water area the water contains lots of Alkaline deposits which contribute to making your clthes dry stiff and hard. Vinegar is Acid and neutralises these deposits, thus making your laundry softer without the need for fab softener. That's the theory anyway. If you live in a hard water area you will know because you will get lots of limescale deposit in your kettle, for example. Hth. I used fabric softener more for its antistatic properties myself - hence still using a tiny amount for hand rinsing vulnerable items of clothing. There's nothing worse than a skirt that clings to your legs and ends up showing more than you would want to :o

I have been using Iceland's Easy Aloe Vera washing powder, £1 for a box and really like it. Also they have a £1 tub of Easy Oxi fabric stain remover and I pop in a 1/2 scoop if there is problem washing in the machine.

I was told many years ago by a washing machine repair man to half what they say on the packet and then half again, that most repair problems are due to too much washing powder :)
