To say his viewpoints are invalid are truly incredulous. You need to take a long hard look in the mirror Anihilator, i find it fantastical you take such pleasure in giving people terrible news... maybe you should work on a terminal cancer ward.
I'm starting to wonder if you ARE my UK sales manager with a net based alter ego....
I contributed to another thread on here in which someone was wrongly accused of theft at work. Mr A constantly trolled the thread, intimating that there was no smoke without fire, yadda yadda yadda. She was cleared. If you check his posting history he makes a particular point of trolling on threads where people have been dismissed, or are facing misconduct hearings etc and their job is at risk. His posts are solely aimed at upsetting the person with the employment problem and he's done it on numerous occasions. Whatever floats his boat I suppose. When you posted your problem I suspected he'd turn up. Do not feed the troll! The best of luck - you'll get lots of good advice and support here, and ignore the (very) odd contribution from those who have rather peverse urges.....0 -
Anihilator reminds me of a colleague of mine years ago; we called him Dr Death, if someone had an ailment, something simple even a broken fingernail, he would know or know of someone who had died as a consequence. as in ingrowing toenail, ignored it, went septic, foot amputated, but too late gangrene set in & died..
LOL
I was thinking he's definitely the glass is at least half empty sort of character too before I put him on block (which I imagine most people here have done by now)I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Hi, don't usually post on this board and found this entirely by accident. Situations like this are always difficult and whilst not agreeing with the troll, it will come down to one person's word against another and that is where reputation comes into it. As has been said, it was at the close of the party and not many people were left around as witnesses, and then understandably annoyed, the OP tried to reason with the manager, getting more and more frustrated and angry so that words were said that would have been inappropriate in a work environment. It is unclear why the manager has taken this action as it seems a bit severe in the circumstances as detailed here.
It was precisely for this reason that I did not go on the last office 'do' as my manager had been making life awkward for me and I did not want to risk a situation arising where I would be forced to defend myself surrounded by people who were drunk. When it did come down to it and I lodged a grievance against him, even though people agreed with me in private, they were too scared to say so publicly for fear of their own jobs. That tends to be the problem with bullies.

hello.
have just quickly read this all through, and just wanted to say that i really feel for you.
as another poster has mentioned, i would ring acas tomorrow and also get their take on the scenario.
i am also trying to think ahead for what might come up at the meeting and how you can prepare yourself. (i'm not suggesting you have to answer on here, just things to think about). when did you last attend your GP (a last known date for this to show you are not guilty might be handy)? when was your last appraisal/review etc and what was the outcome?
re. this 'manager' - has he ever made similar allegations or caused similar problems (you may need someone to dig for this)? the fact that you were all inebriated surely invalidates all of the evidence? has he breached any confidentiality or 'appropriateness' rules as either a staff member or a manager?
just out of interest has anybody at work (to you knowledge) ever had a drink or drug problem in or out of work and how was it managed?
does your company have a staff handbook/disliplinary procedure? find out - if it does you need to be able to have a copy and read it before your meeting.
in theory there is no evidence to support the claim of drug use (as there is none) ie. he heard you 'sniff' in the toilet next to him. btw, was it a urinal or a normal toilet ie. would there have been anywhere for you to snort drugs off?
will think further......
http://www.drugstraining.co.uk/drugsworkplace.html#Whatare this is interesting - even suggests that even if a person has a drug problem it should be treated as an illness etc rather than a crime.
OMG! have a look at the page further down 'Off Duty Conduct' - it even gives examples of staff parties and free bars etc! ie. potential evidence to show (should you need it) to support that the 'manager's' claims cannot be substantiated etc. hope it's helpful.0 -
Why is it the idiots always end-up as managers?, is it because sh=t floats?.
op, do you know where this sales manager used to work prior to working with you?, if so, find out from his former work colleagues as to why he left, if he was sacked for gross misconduct or bullying or such, then feel free to mention it in passing at Wednesdays meeting.Never Knowingly Understood.

While you are at it see if you can find out if he is gay, a wife beater, interferes with kids, is a racist, picks his nose in public and any other such things.
It is of no relevance at this stage in the proceedings.

It is a shame you are not in the union. The following is a true story.
After an 'everyone must attend' off site training day at a previous job, someone left a wallet behind. In this wallet was a substance which looked almost but not quite like 'normal' tobacco, found in the process of seeing if there was any ID in the wallet. There wasn't.
The senior manager decided - for reasons I could never quite fathom - to take this wallet home with them rather than hand it in to police. Later that night a colleague called at their house to ask if a wallet had been left, and the manager made it clear that they were aware that what was in it was not 'normal' tobacco, the colleague said "I can explain" and the manager said "Don't say anything, just take it and go."
The colleague was suspended pending an investigation and disciplinary.
The disciplinary took about 5 minutes. The manager described what had happened, the union chap said "Where's your proof that this wasn't 'normal' tobacco?", case collapsed.
HOWEVER, the key thing here is that almost NO-ONE knew why a colleague had been suspended! It certainly wasn't all round the building, I only found out about it after the disciplinary had collapsed, and I should NOT have heard this story - it was a serious breach of confidentiality.
So the drugs charge is, I'd say, the least of your worries. The abuse and threatening behaviour is what you have to work on.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
