Does anyone know where we can go and have a look at the bed we want.

I'm afraid this has been pursued before and I don't think you will find anywhere in the south of England; your only chance is to go up to Yorkshire where the bed is made. A year or two ago there was a stockist in the south - Richard Eade in Bordon Hants - but looking on their website now they don't appear to stock La Romantica anymore.

Perhaps a friendly Madrid-owning Member in the south will read this and offer a viewing/laying !
We did drive up to Baldock the other day to go to Bedlum Beds (as per the address on the website), but it's only an online company and we really don't want to shell out that sort of money for something we have never seen. I know there is an assurance that we can return it if it is not as it should be, but would have to pay if it is 'unsuitable'.
You might find that Bedlum are a little more lenient - their Terms and Conditions quote:

"Bedlum Beds give a 100% satisfaction guarantee, so if you don't like it, just let us know within 14 days of delivery..... and we will either give you a full refund, or change it for another model(we will always try to find a suitable replacement first). Mattress protectors must be used to qualify for the satisfaction guarantee, and goods must be in perfect condition."

See what you can negotiate with their friendly sales staff.
  • I'm currently looking to buy a single divan bed with 2 drawers for our spare bedroom for now, then within the next year the bed will then be used for our son who is still in his cot bed at present. We dont really want to spend more than £400 total for the bed and would ideally like pocket sprung with memory foam or latex on top if we can get a half decent one for that money.

I've seen the sleepeezee cool comfort 1400 which seems to be pretty good and fits nicely within our price range.

My questions are: Are sleepeezee beds any good generally. Also seen quite a lot of cumfilux beds which seem on the face of it to be quite good value? Is the cool comfort 1400 a good mattress? Any suggestions for beds within my price range based on your experiences.

    Cheers

£400 should be able to get you a single memory foam or latex bed, but make sure you use a mattress protector when you young son uses it. Sleepeezee and Cumflilux are both very big manufacturers, their beds are generally good, but if you look for a smaller manufacturer you will get better value for money. Other decent bed manufacturers are Highgate and Deluxe beds.

Sleepeezee and Cumfilux are part of big companies, and are very middle to low end of the range. I can't find listed anywhere the density of the memory foam for the cool comfort 1400. This is quite often an indication that the density is quite low. You should be looking at 60 to 70kg per m3.

For the best quality at a low price you should stay away from the big brand names, and buy on line from a seller who gives a proper satisfaction guarantee that allows you to actually unpack and sleep on the bed. This way it will be in the sellers interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time. Otherwise it will cost them money.
  • I am looking to buy a mattress (double), pocket spring, without memory foam. My budget is up to around £400. I tried out most of the ones on display at John Lewis and found that I preferred the ones rated 'firm'.

I've read some positive comments on the Kozee Sleep 'Orthopocket' and after a bit of searching found a local shop with one on display. It didn't feel particularly firm, but the salesman pointed out that it was on a slatted base, and said it should be on a divan base.

I tried some of the other mattresses they had on display and found that I liked the Assured Sleep 'Buckingham' (this can be seen on the assuredsleep website). It felt quite firm, although I can't find any information regarding tension rating for this mattress. The salesman said that the amount/quality (or lack of) of fillings used could give the impression of firmness. This was priced at £239 so I'm not sure if this is a quality product. Does anyone know if Assured Sleep are a good make? - I can't find any mention of them on these forums.

You will find that pocket sprung mattresses only really go up to medium to firm. This is because the pocket springs are designed to contour to your body, and if the springs were too firm, then you would just be perched on top of them rather than they actually contouring to you.

The salesman was right in saying that less fillings will give a firmer feeling, but this will also reduce long term comfort.

I can't understand why the salesman didn't move the mattress onto a platform top base in order for you to try it out on there.

The only other way to increase the firmness without lowering quality would be if it was pocket sprung with high density memory foam, that would spread the weight out over the springs and make it feel slightly firmer.
  • Thanks for your quick response, Tim.

The 'Orthopocket' which was on a slatted base was a 5ft version and I think that may have been the only 5ft base in the shop - it is a small local firm selling furniture and carpets - the beds showroom contained about 8 beds.

My present mattress is a Cumfilux coiled spring type purchased from Bensons in 1988 when I thought all mattresses were the same and the biggest shops the best value :(. At the time I had some slight backache trouble and chose it because it was quite firm. So most of the mattresses I've tried in the last few days have felt 'soft'.
  • Hi everyone, sorry to butt in here. Just thought i would let you know that Argos have an "up to half price" sale on matresses, until the 2nd March

I have just bought the Kozeesleep Ortho Pocket, after much research & advice from here :T. It is lovely - not too firm, I was afraid of what Tim said about perching, rather than it contouring, but it is very supportive. I have a bad back, neck & shoulders and they've been great this week. Only issue with it is it that it is very thick, I feel like I'm on a top bunk :rotfl:.

I ordered it from https://www.mynextmattress.co.uk and can highly recommend them. Ordered Sunday, out of stock. Phone call Thursday to ask when they could deliver, arrived as agreed & they phoned to say on their way. I was chuffed, especially as I couldn't find out much about them :T

Hi all, sorry to barge in on this thread but i too am in the market for a new double mattress. After much research on the matter i am now certain in my mind that i am going to purchase a pocket sprung mattress with a layer of memory foam.
I live in the north east of england and am keen to test any new mattress before i purchase. I am keen to avoid the big name brands as the excellent Tim Deegan has strongly advised.

My research has lead me to a bed manufacturer by the name of Palatine Beds who are based in newcastle, they also have a factory shop so i can test the mattresses.

Does anyone have any previous knowldege of this company and the quality of their products.

The mattress i am considering buying (prior to testing) is this one:

Imperial 1400 Count Pocket Mattress/Memory Foam (No Turn) Mattress

Apologies, but i am not allowed to post links, please follow the instructions below to get to the mattress.

Search for palatine beds on google and enter the website.

    GO TO:
    SHOP
    RETAIL
    RETAIL MATTRESSES
(Then select the mattress which is second down in the list)

at a cost of £350 delivered it seems good value, please let me know what you think. (especially tim)

    thankyou
