Mattress type help

Hello all
I need a new single mattress for my flat and I don't have much experience with them.
In my room at my Mums, there's a 4-5 yr old SilentNight one (no idea what type it is, the terms are so confusing) but it's solid, I like it. The only bad thing is I've fell out of it a few times. I know these mattresses don't get much praise on here, this one only gets slept in at weekends, maybe that's why its lasted
Anyway 3-4 months ago I bought a cheap 'Firm' Cloud Nine bed from Argos for my flat. It's the worst thing I've ever slept in. It's noisy, it's soft, and nothing like the one at my Mums. I've even resorted to sleeping on top of a duvet so I can't feel the spring things so much.
I've got £250 max to spend on a proper firm mattress & I don't know which type I should be looking for. Any help would be much appreciated. I would prefer to use Argos or online shops and not go to a store.

The lesson here is never to buy anything from argos if you want it to be even half decent quality (unless you pay the earth for it).
The cloud nine is described as medium to firm, although it contains 13.5 gauge springs that are actually medium. Looking at the picture of the mattress it looks like there is hardly any quilting, so I bet you can feel the springs? It is probably down to the lack of quilting that they rate it as medium to firm.
You didn't say what size mattress you were after, but if you shop on line, and stay away from the big brand names, then you would easily be able to get a top of the range firm open coil sprung mattress for £250. Just make sure the springs are 12.5 gauge.0 -
Hi Tim, Thanks for taking time to reply.
Just been reading through some of the big mattress thread and shortlisted Kozee Sleep matresses. There's a few of these at Beds123.co.uk which is in Leeds, just one shop I've browsed.
My mattress will need to go on the Cloud Nine divan base and be single size. Am I right in saying you recommended Pocket Sprung mattresses for these type of base? I'd still like my new mattress to be firm. I'm sure my mild backpain can be blamed on sleeping on a hard mattress one day & then soft mattress the next.
3 mattresses I've got my eye on..
Kozee Sleep Pocketmaster 1100 (£210)
Kozee Sleep Ortho Pocket 1500 (£230)
Kozee Sleep Stressfree Tuffed Mattress (£200) (open coil)
If you know of these beds, do they sound okay?
Thanks againSealed Pot Challenge 15 #78

Kozeesleep are a good brand, as long as it is the Dewsbury Kozeesleep (which these are).
As I have said previously, you should make sure the seller has a satisfaction guarantee. The seller you quoted actually claims to give a money back guarantee, but this isn't actually the case if you read their returns policy:"Should you wish to return an item to us we will collect it from you at a cost of £40. Alternatively, if you wish you may organise to return the item yourself."You can't try a mattress out properly with the plastic packaging still on it. You need to be able to sleep on it for a few nights without any packaging.
"Mattresses can only be returned if they are unopened. Mattresses which have been opened and slept on cannot be returned. If you wish to test a mattress please keep it wrapped until you are sure you want to keep it."
You do know the prices you quoted are for single mattresses don't you?0 -
Hi Tim
Yes, I spotted their not so great money back guarantee. Still shopping around though, but I'll stick with the Kozeesleep brand and yes, the single one is indeed the one I want

Thanks for helping
Although Kozeesleep are a good brand and are independent (actually the largest independent bed manufacturer in the UK), there are many other smaller independent manufacturers who are just as good if not better, and are cheaper.0 -
Hi fellow MSE'ers
Hubby and I are trying to buy a new bed. Before I stumbled on this forum, we'd ruled out Dreams (didn't like their sales technique), decided we wanted pocket sprung mattress but probably not memory foam (due to it making you hot and not sure how well it lasts), visited an independent retailer and shortlisted a Kozee Sleep Empress. The shop price was £1249 for king size mattress and divan with 4 drawers - ouch - so I hopped online to look for a better deal (£729 is the best I've seen so far). Then I came across this forum.
Now it looks like the company Kozeesleep are well thought of on MSE, so I'm encouraged (hadn't heard of them before), but I'm not so sure of the verdict on Kozee Sleep, which is a separate company based in Birmingham. I think the bed we road-tested was a Birmingham one, so I'm a bit wary of buying a bed from the Dewsbury company even though Tim said they are better, as it might not be the same as the one we tried in store. Does anyone have any feedback on the Birmingham-based Kozee Sleep, and/or know if £729 is a good deal for the Empress? We haven't bought a new bed for at least 10 years, and that was a cheap one, so we don't mind spending that much for a long-lasting bed.
All suggestions/advice gratefully received!

There are a couple of reasons that some people say that memory foam makes you too hot:
a) Some manufacturers use very deep layers of memory foam, and tell people that the deeper the foam the better. The truth is that the optimum thickness for memory foam is 2" to 2 1/2". Less than this and it won't be enough to contour to your body. If the foam is too deep, then you will sink into it, and it will wrap around you making you too hot.
b) Mattresses with Reflex foam and memory foam don't allow air to circulate under the memory foam to remove the heat. This obviously isn't an issue with pocket sprung or open coil sprung and memory foam mattresses. Memory foam does actually absorb heat from your body which then reacts with it to soften it. So as long as the heat can then disperse there is no problem.
Personally I find that I sweat less with my memory foam mattress than I did with my previous one.
By the way, despite what some sellers will tell you, full memory foam mattresses don't exist. If they did you would sink almost the full depth of the mattress and be engulfed by it. All memory foam mattresses (toppers are a different matter), have a layer under the memory foam to give you the bounce. This layer tends to be made from either reflex Foam, pocket springs, or open coil springs.
There are now new fabrics on the market that all claim to keep you cool in summer, and warm in winter. Some of these fabrics are just wicking fabrics that take the moisture away from your body so that you don't feel clammy. Other fabrics are rather clever, and actually stabilise the temperature. The best of these fabrics (in my opinion) available at the moment is Thermocool, or Climasmart as it is also known.
If you are really sensitive to heat, then there is always the alternative of latex foam. However you need to make sure it has a 2" deep full layer, and not just in zones like some manufacturers use.
In general Kozeesleep in Dewsbury are better quality. From what I understand it is due to the Birmingham one cutting quality that caused the split.0 -
Hi there, I'm also after an new matress, sorry for posting in here but thought it would be better than starting a completely new topic as this one has given some good advice. Tim - Have you heard of sleepright and what are their matresses like?
Thanks...

I have heard of Sleepright, but I don't know much about the company or their quality. However the mattress in the link is reflex foam with memory foam which I don't like as they can be hot and sweaty. The support they give is on a par with open coil sprung/memory foam mattresses, but the bubbles in the reflex foam can start to burst and dips can develop in the mattress in time.
The depth of the memory foam is good at 50mm (2"), but they don't state the density which should be between 60 and 70kg per m3.0 -

Thanks for the swift reply Tim, so what should I be looking at instead of reflex foam? Or would it be better avoiding any foam topped matress and sticking to pocket sprung only?Mortgage Free Wannabe Light Bulb Moment (Early 2012, started May 2012)
