The lesson here is never to buy anything from argos if you want it to be even half decent quality (unless you pay the earth for it).

    Hi Tim,

I was hoping to purchase a Silentnight Mayfair bed (kingsize) from Argos. They have a 15% discount offer on, but i can't find anyone else who sells this mattress, other than Argos.

Your dire warning advising against purchasing from Argos is worrying me.

This range has both miracoil and a mini layer of pocket sprung with a dusting of memory foam... not sure how firm it is though.:j

    Any thoughts?

samy888, you must be trying to wind Tim up ! ..... he hates Silentnight. I have plently experience in the bed industry too, and you are making a big mistake even considering Silentnight. The reason why you cant find the same bed anywhere else is they make a slightly different mattress for Argos, the same way they do for a lot of the big stores, this makes the bed exclusive to them, then Argos charge what they like because you cant compre the price with another store.

When comparing mattresses, look for type of spring, guage (firmness), number of pocket springs, fillings, turnable, tufting etc. (stay away for big brand names)

My advise go to a local independent bed shop and try the mattresses, guaranteed they will give a better price and better product than Argos any day of the week.

Phew! Having read this thread & a few similar ones, the song 'There are more questions than answers' comes to mind. ;~} (Thanks Johnny). It's apparent that mattresses like La Romatica-Madrid & Kozeesleep are brands to be aware of but I'm having real difficulty in finding other independent brands that offer turnable pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses. Any ideas?

Deluxe-beds & Highgate websites are either down or muddled respectively so not much help there. I have a 5' divan base & would prefer to be the right side of £400 but will stretch to the £450-£500 mark as a good mattress should last a while, certainly longer than a 100% foam mattress it would appear, so any further comments or recommendations, or perhaps Tim could just let us know what he spent his hard earned on. (Just kidding, Tim ;~)

I have come across divan centre who claim to have several pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses such as Savoy, Milan & Deluxe around the £250 mark but surely this is too good to be true?

Deluxe Beds make a Milan mattress but I dont think it is pocket springs? Deluxe make a very nice mattress called the Limoges, its 1500 spring, side stitched, good quality fillings (no memory foam). They also do the Reverso in 1000 Pocket Springs, memory foam on one side, tufted with no memory foam on the other. Both these should be retailing under or around £450.

Highgate have a mattress called Total Comfort - its 1500 spring with memory foam. This one is probably more expensive.

All these are very nice mattresses and good quality. Its not that easy to find sites selling these, so it could be worth your while giving Highgate and Deluxe a call and asking for your nearest supplier.

    Thanks Greentea,

Silentnight was not a wind up, i genuinely was going to buy that brand, I already own one!
I've checked all the things you suggested and it ticked all the boxes. I went to Dreams and they were very overpriced for a similar product.

What do you make of that particular range, the Miracoil 3 1400 pocket Mayfair mattress. IT SOUNDS REALLY REALLY GOOD.

Can you suggest a brand that is reliable... i have a bad back so need something good. All i keep coming across is Sealy, Keats, Cosmic and Layzee.

    Thanks. :)

You really need to do a search on MSE for that brand before you go anywhere near them.

The Miracoil spring system is a continuous spring system which is probably the most unreliable design on the market. In fact most manufacturers used to use the continuous spring system, but have stopped due to reliability and noise problems.

Sealy and Layezee are also part of the Silentnight group.

You should stay well away from big brands and big chain stores. Instead order on line from a seller who gives a proper satisfaction guarantee that allows you to unpack and sleep on the mattress. This way it will be in the sellers interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time.

I desperately need a mattress, i was ready to sign the cheque, my poor aching back...

Thanks Tim You've just thrown a spanner in the works!!!

I'm new to this board, there are sooo many threads and not enough hours in the day... i get that you hate silentnight, but in their defence the mattress we have has been brilliant for the last 9 years. We paid £700 at the time and i've never regretted one penny of it.

There aren't any good independent retailers around here... just Dreams.

The sales advisor wanted us to purchase the Keats memory pocket sprung mattress for £1500, with free pillows and a cup of coffee.

Can you at least steer me in the right direction, without advertising, drop subtle hints.;);)

BTW, Sainsbury are offering the "unmentionable" (azure miracoil 7) mattress half price with a five year warranty. :j

9 years ago they made good mattresses, but like many of the big brands they seem to have cut quality in order to cut production costs.

Read the small print for the 5 year warranty.........it isn't a guarantee.

Do you have no other independant stores selling beds in you area? There must be some - a furniture store maybe? Personally I think its important to see and feel the mattress before I buy, even web sites that offer good returns, its the hassle of returning. You'll find there are some stores out there that will allow you return if its not comfortable.

There are some that allow you to return them, but they usually insist that you have to choose another from their range, and won't refund. So you have to be careful.

Trying a bed out for 10 minutes fully clothed only gives you a very rough idea. You really need to sleep on a bed for a few nights to be sure.

I don't see how it is any more hassle exchanging a mattress at a shop, than it is from an on line company, as they both deliver. Because it costs an on line company more to replace a mattress they are more likely to make sure you make the right purchase the first time, rather than pushing you towards one that gives them the most commision. On line companies are also usually far cheaper.
