Deluxe Beds make a Milan mattress but I dont think it is pocket springs? Deluxe make a very nice mattress called the Limoges, its 1500 spring, side stitched, good quality fillings (no memory foam). They also do the Reverso in 1000 Pocket Springs, memory foam on one side, tufted with no memory foam on the other. Both these should be retailing under or around £450.

Highgate have a mattress called Total Comfort - its 1500 spring with memory foam. This one is probably more expensive.

All these are very nice mattresses and good quality. Its not that easy to find sites selling these, so it could be worth your while giving Highgate and Deluxe a call and asking for your nearest supplier.

Thanks for all you help Greentea, looks like the memory foam ones you mention are single sided tho' the Reverso is open coil & reversible but with no memory foam on the other side so that it is cooler in summer. Which kind of begs the question, why can't you simply turn over a single sided memory foam with pocket springs? This would stop the problem of overuse on one side.

Just tried a one sided mem. foam Shakespeare mattress (Memory Plus) locally and quite impressed, I'm still a mem. foam virgin.:p Anyone heard of Shakespeare before?

Do you have no other independant stores selling beds in you area? There must be some - a furniture store maybe? Personally I think its important to see and feel the mattress before I buy, even web sites that offer good returns, its the hassle of returning. You'll find there are some stores out there that will allow you return if its not comfortable.

I've found a Bedz are Uzz locally, and you will not believe they're located opposite where i used to work!! Huge building and i never noticed it! :o

In my defence i used to enter through the staff entrance which was at the back and it was a couple of years of go. Still i can't believe it! :D

The salesman recommended Vi-spring and Dunloppi as good beds. Although online they ask you to call them for a better price...that sends shivers down my spine. What should i expect, 10% off or as in the case of Dreams, 2 free pillows?

Furniture village, I've just found out is quite close as well. Their range is similar, so will have a lot of price comparing to do tomorrow.:)

Non turn mattresses are made with quilting on only one side to cut production costs. So the other side isn't designed to be slept on.

Shakespeare Beds are actually part of the Birmingham Kozee Sleep (the not so good quality one out of the two).

Yes I bet they did tell you that Vi-Sping and Dunlopillo were good mattresses. They are also very very expensive.

Dunlopillo are now owned by the Hilding Anders group, and according to people who have owned the mattresses before they were taken over, and then have bought one since, they say that they aren't the same quality that they used to be.

Furniture Village are a big chain. Bedz are Uzzz are part of a smaller chain.
  • Tim,

I'd appreciate your opinion on the spec of this mattress:
    sleeplandbeds.co.uk/lush-pocket-double-mattress
(sorry I'm not allowed to post a link).

Tried one in the showroom and found it very comfortable. I've seen it priced at £265 (including delivery) elsewhere and this seems too cheap for the perceived quality - am I missing something?

    Hi Tim,

I know the Vi spring mattress is expensive but I'm willing to pay a little more for something that is good. I wake up in pain every day... so need something good. The spring system in the Vi-spring seems different, not sure if that's good or bad...it looks really strange.

Furniture village has a few different ranges that are a bit cheaper. What should i look out for, more springs or deeper filling?

Appreciate any advice you can offer.:)

In general Joseph tend to be fairly low down in the quality range. So I'd say you can actually get far better for your £265.

You don't need to pay Vi-Spring prices to get a very good quality bed. All you would be doing is paying for the name. Many of these companies with reputations for quality go on about still making their mattresses by hand. We that is exactly how many of the smaller independent manufacturers still make them.

In what way did you mean the springs look different? They are pocket springs, and that's what pocket springs look like.

I'd go for between 1000 and 1800 springs in a king size mattress, and a mattress that is about 10" deep.
  • hi Tim
I am looking to buy a King size pockets sprung mattress, med to firm
following your advise I have avoided the big names and gone to my local independant warehouse. He has a 1000 pocket sprung Winchester mattress made by Premier Beds of Batley West Yorks at £240(about £20 more than on the web) I can find very little about Premier Beds do you know of them, and is this a fair price.thanks in advance mike

    Hi Tim, :)

The Vi spring mattress was not all that, too soft and didn't offer enough support. I was surprised to find the most comfortable mattress at the time was the sleepeezee Toronto 800 pocket sprung K/S. I remembered what you said and tried the 1200 pocket sprung but it was softer than the 800 pocket sprung, doesn't more springs mean more support?

What do you make of the sleepeezee brand?
