I've never had one either, I'm embarrased just thinking about it! I really must pluck up the courage to do it one day .
I've had 2 kids as well - the midwife laughed at me because I kept all my clothes on for as long as possible and wouldnt take my top off (why would I need to give birth topless, I've never understood that!) xxx

My daughter's birth was a breech/forceps delivery in the 70's and the epidural was a fairly new thing - because of all this, I ended up with a crowd of many viewing me from all angles - the only one that wasn't allowed in was my husband (the rules then with 'complicated' births).
Since then, nothing fazes me - but, there was an advert last year, aimed at men and bowel/testicular cancer, asking them not to 'allow embarassment to kill them' - the same sentiment applies to women - it's better to be embarassed than get cancer.;)
LinYou can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset.0 -
OP here, sorry to resurrect an old thread but I went for my appointment last night and wanted to thank everyone who reassured me. It was a tad embarrassing but the nurse was lovely, no pain at all, not even cold! Luckily everything looked normal so I don't have to do it again for three years!
To all those who are putting it off, the relief of having it over and done with is worth the embarrassment and a friend of mine just got a result of abnormal cells even though she's in her twenties so please please go!0 -

Two great tips I was given were:
1 Lay with your knees bent and the soles of your feet facing each other and your hands linked behind your head - this helps you relax and breathe better.
2 if the speculum is uncomfortable as its being inserted then give a little cough!
I have a rear-facing cervix and used to find the whole procedure very uncomfortable but this position helps and I switch off and concentrate on my breathing. I have them every 6 months so I'm an old pro!!!!One life.0 -

As a gynae nurse i can reassure you that once your in the nurses room having your smear done the nurse is thinking about the list of phone calls she needs to do before she leave the surgery, what time the dr has arranged for the regime of swine flu jabs and whether her car needs fuel!
Go in relaxed as possible, start a conversation with the nurse, maybe explain your feeling anxious. By the time you have told her your plans for this years summer holiday in spain staying in a gorgeous villa - its over all done!
Embarrassment is one of the main causes for a women not going for a smear test, a majority of women are not worried about discomfort or results but pure embarrassment!
As a nurse i can reassure anyone who feels embarrassed - please don`t be, your not the only women who has had to have one you may even be the 10th of the day! All of us are the same albeit slightly different and during examinations thoughts dont even come into our minds its our job and it is what we do and are used too.
I have been a gynae nurse for 8 years and would rather see a worried, embarrassed patient then a women who is very ill because she was too embarrassed to have a simple test.DebtFree FEB 2010!Slight blip in 2013 - Debtfree Aug 2014 :j

I went for mine a couple of weeks ago. It was a doddle! lol.
I was anxious about it and when I went in there was the lady doctor and a lady GP who was learning. The GP did it first and I think I wasnt fully relaxed so it hurt, enough for me to cover my face lol but the doctor took over and done it and never felt a thing. Best thing to do is relax and it will all be over in a jiffy. Its really not as bad as you think it will be and not even as embarrassing as you expect! Never had anything like this done before so wasnt looking forward to it but I will definitely go for my next. Had my results back and everything normal so that is good.Weight loss November 09-January 10: [STRIKE]13lbs[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]20lbs[/STRIKE] 27lbs! :j0
