This might be a bit too personal, but I've just turned 25...

...and I'm dreading going for my first smear test! Its not helping that my one friend who's already had one is telling me horror stories.

Can anybody reassure me please? Please!

I had my first at 18 and many more since. Seriously, it is no big deal at all. I can hardly feel a thing and although it's not the most elegant of experiences, the nurse or doctor doing it will have done hundreds!

Please dont worry, it'll be fine.
  • I had my 1st at the beginning of the year and I was the same but they're not as bad as people make out! Honest:)
The best thing is to relax as much as you possibly can(not easy!) and let the nurse get on with it.
I'm quite scientifically minded and chatty so was talking to the nurse about what she was doing and how they went about tests etc...then we ended up talking about the snow...mainly coz it took me 10mins to walk 2 mins up the road:rolleyes:
The worst bit for me was having to ask for a blanket to cover my foof:o...its one thing knowing what shes looking at but I didn't want to be reminded of it every time I looked her way:rotfl:

  • I had my first aged 19 (I'm 26 now),

Its uncomfortable, and a little embarrasing but not too bad, Just try to relax as much as possible! I sing a song in my head or let my mind wander!

    Good luck with it!!

ETA: Ignore the horror storys! I got tons of these from "friends" both with smear and pregnancy!

Has gone to play on her own little world for a bit..... but its ok the voices in her head came too so she's not alone ;)
  • I had my first smear about 10 years ago, and it picked up abnormal cells, which were later removed and luckly all is fine now.
It might not be the nicest thing that you get done but it is really worth it. dont worry too much its more embarrasing than painful.
  • I have had 2 and I am 25. I had my last one in September and it was totally fine. Though it's not something that bothers me so I guess I was rather relaxed. I'm tall as well and so the nurse said most tall women don't have trouble getting smears but she did say she has a nightmare with some women but it's always because they aren't relaxed and they make it so much more uncomfortable for themselves. I honestly think it's nothing to be even slightly worried about, it's over in seconds and doctors/nurses have seen all sorts anyway!
  • I had my first one last year and it is really nothing to worry about. It honestly didn't hurt and was over in two minutes.

Slightly differently, I do find it very uncomfortable BUT not uncomfortable enought to risk not going.

Okay Im 34 I have had oodles , all i can say its cold and may hurt a little . But U will be fine. If the doc does hurt you ( 1 occasion with me ) complain immediatly . i asked for a nurse to come and do it and she obliged .

Go in a skirt ( easy whip of the kecks cant see sorted ) , have a shower before hand ( cant be nice for the professionsal and im not saying u smell )

All in all it will be fine . 2 mins of slight discomfort are better than cancer oir abnormal cells anyday . I shoudl know it runs in my family , thats why mine started at 18 :(

just relax , go in whip em off have it done put em on go home for a glass of wine.. :)

Thanks for the replies guys, it is the embarrassment I'm worried about more than the physical pain I think. I'll just have to keep telling myself that they've seen it all before a thousand times and nobody cares!

I will definitely be having a shower immediately before, I'm a bit concerned about, ahem. personal grooming though! I don't believe in waxing!

Hey, its nothing to be embarrassed about. TBH, I think in can be less embarrassing than..the other reason you might be in a similar position....and you don't have to hope they call the next day :D

They really have seen everything before...including pubic hair. Please don't worry about that!
