They do organic and fairtrade bananas at both my stores, if you want to pay more that is up to you, they have the child's sizes bananas, wrapped ones that you pay the weight for, loose ones, organic, fairtrade, green ones, yellow ones, waitrose charges a high price for some items that can be bought elsewhere exactly the same, like M&S it is expensive for some things but you are paying for the quality and it is in it's own league when it comes to the salmon, fish platters etc.

  • not true......Tesco and Asda cheap bananas are not Fairtrade. Waitrose only sells fairtrade bananas.

But the banana is still the same, how much you pay for it does not alter the banana in any way.

It may be fresher, less ripe, bigger, smaller etc - so a banana is not simply a banana.;)

I didn't say it was. What I meant was if one supermarket offers a fair price to the grower, and another offers a lower price, it doesn't alter the banana, it's still the same banana.

I don't have a link but am surprised people are mentioning Waitrose above Tescos for meat- I could be reading wrong (I don't buy meat you see) but on the hidden brands thread (forget the board!) there were several posters claiming that prepackaged meat was more often then not produced by a whole seller which the supermarkets bought. The Supermarkets would then apply their label's and hey presto, own brand meat. I even read one poster who worked in Asda had unwrapped some boxes only to find the same product but with another store's brand labels on!

    .

And that is what sets Waitrose apart. They are part of the John Lewis Partnership which actually owns farms. Naturally, not all their meat is sourced from them, but much of it is. The rest is sourced to Waitrose specifications - apparently, even their milk is from selected farms.

This 'it's all made in the same factory' business is all right as far as it goes, but it can be misleading. Different stores operate to different standards and Waitrose's standards are extremely high (as are Marks and Spencer's, in fairness).

I have family connections in the packaging business, and can vouch for the seriousness with which food producers take an inspection from Waitrose or M&S. Some of the others? Not so much.

In my experience, the problem with Tesco's meat is that it's unpredictable. Their 'Finest' range is OK, but when you buy the standard quality (particularly their beef and steak) you just can't be sure what it will be like. That's not a problem with Waitrose.

This is what I really like about Waitrose - their standard own-brand products are both excellent quality and good value for money.

Waitrose is better all round for quality and worth the extra cost. Lovely shop, lovely food, just wish I could afford to shop there all the time! They do have some good offers though too.

Sainsburys and Morrisons would be second choice, Morrisons for quality for the price you pay and the offers, and Sainsburys although a bit more expensive, but has a larger choice of items.

Tesco and Asda would be bottom of my list of preferred shops. I find Asda is expensive and only bleats on about it's offers that week, everything else is higher priced! Tesco I'm just not keen on the quality of the items and again, apart from offers, I don't find it that cheap in comparison to Morrisons.

However, I do visit all shops where practical depending on offers and what I want to buy!

You took my exact words out of my mouth!! We don't have a waitrose near enough to use on a regular basis, but I use Morrisons the most with sainsburys second and tesco and asda bottom of the list.

I would even prefer Aldi and Lidl to Tesco/asda, certainly for quality.

Mind you I also regularly use local farm shops in particular for fruit and veg/cheese and meats. All fresh and mostly locally sourced.

Well worth seeing if you have any local suppliers who can give you what you want. No point in rock bottom prices if the food is then rubbish. For pennies more you can get something much better quality (in particular I am thinking of tescos so called discount brands) from the continental shops (aldi/lidl) or a local supplier. I also rate morrisons for meat if I can't get to the butchers. Plus sainsburys so some tasty joints.

Tesco meat and fish is definately cheap and mostly nasty.

  • Hi,
actually, some of the fruit/veg is deffo better in Waitrose, imho.

I frequently find potatos from tescos don't last that long, and I often have to bin them for being rotten, but ones from Waitrose seem to last a lot longer.

    Cheers,

  • I have read your post ten times, but still don't understand it

Are you saying that when you shop in Tesco et al, you buy food you can't eat before it's use buy date, so have to throw it out and go back and buy the same thing again?

Or are you saying that when you buy food from Tesco et al you eat it and have to buy more, but when you buy food at Waitrose you don't eat it, therefore don't have to buy more?

What i meant to say was that when we purchase meats from Tesco they seem to have a shorter life in our fridge than waitrose, ergo we have to buy new food!

(what i originally wrote did make sense - to me!)
