I don't have a link but am surprised people are mentioning Waitrose above Tescos for meat- I could be reading wrong (I don't buy meat you see) but on the hidden brands thread (forget the board!) there were several posters claiming that prepackaged meat was more often then not produced by a whole seller which the supermarkets bought. The Supermarkets would then apply their label's and hey presto, own brand meat. I even read one poster who worked in Asda had unwrapped some boxes only to find the same product but with another store's brand labels on!

As for my point of view- I'd have to rate fresh fruit and veg from Tesco over Waitrose any day! I have never eaten so many bad/off/bruised items of fruit as I have from Waitrose! Then they have the audacity to charge more for it!! Luckily I feel able to complain and often get my money back when I have bitten into a prepackaged fruit salad and had it 'fizz' in my mouth (as its off!)
However, some (not all) fruit from Tescos is slightly under ripe. Works very well if you live alone and have time to ripen foods or just prefer a crunchy apple rather then a fluffy textured one! Something I prefer but others may not.

I have read your post ten times, but still don't understand it

Are you saying that when you shop in Tesco et al, you buy food you can't eat before it's use buy date, so have to throw it out and go back and buy the same thing again?

Or are you saying that when you buy food from Tesco et al you eat it and have to buy more, but when you buy food at Waitrose you don't eat it, therefore don't have to buy more?

I read this and struggled too - so glad to see it is not just me.
Makes no sense what so ever.

I tend not to buy packaged meat, I have a good local butcher but also a fresh meat counter in my local Waitrose where the staff appear to be very knowledgeable. My local grocer gets most of my fruit and veg custom but experience has taught me that my nearest Morrisons has the worst fruit and veg of any supermarket.
I don't know about prepacked fruit salad and the like as if I want a fruit salad I make one.

  • Yes, Waitrose does provide a nicer shopping experience but I can't justify their fruit and veg prices! I mean at the end of the day, a banana is a banana regardless of which store you buy it in.

If only that were true (the banana bit)

Most of the self label foods are pretty similiar wherever you buy, so I'm not surprised over the wholesale meat scenario.

Tesco do sell some under ripe fruit - I find it ideal as I can buy a batch of fruit which all ripens at different times during the week.

I've found the same with Morrisons - it just doesn't last the week like other supermarkets do.

Don't buy pre-packed fruit salad at all - too expensive for what is in, I'd rather buy fresh and do it myself (even if you waste some, it is still cheaper).
  • I got a swede last week from Morrisons (a 30p one) cut it in cubes put is in the steamer 60 mins later:eek: it was still rock hard the rest of the dinner was also ruined waiting for it. The 30p Kiwis were nice though.

  • asda's meat and fish are justas bad as tesco in my opinion. I bought prawns from asda a few months back and i havent looked at a prawn since. Used to be my favourite food.

I dislike tesco and asda meat too, buy it from sainsburys mostly, occasionally somerfield, or waitrose if I can get a reduction.
Veg come from Aldis super six
Ordinary groceries (tins, packets, cleaning stuff) sains basics or tesco own brand or any decent offers anywhere.
The truth is, to get the best value you have to shop around but of course this is only possible if you live in a large town.
We don't have a Morrisons anymore, it closed and became a Waitrose - but I never liked the look of Morrisons meat anyway.

not true......Tesco and Asda cheap bananas are not Fairtrade. Waitrose only sells fairtrade bananas.
