Hi Just a follow on I keep getting the same standard emails from Paypal saying I need to put the 4 digit code in to confirm my card and I keep telling them I wasn't given it and sent a copy of my staement to prove it , I wondered if anyone else was having the same problem with Yorkshire bank Mastercard Debit cards and Ebay? . Please tell me I am not the only one who is getting frustrated with these people.

I had this problem at the start of January and only just got it sorted last week.

    Basically:

I bought a few items from eBay, as always I wanted to pay by Paypal.
I put in my new card details and at the same time decided to "confirm" my card with Paypal.
On my bank statement I noticed I was being charges £1.50 per transaction and so complained to the bank.
Yorkshire Bank said it was Paypal's fault. So I contacted Paypal.
They said it was YBs fault, so i went back.
After a bit of back and forth YB finally admitted to me that it was their fault and so refunded me each £1.50.
But, due to the way it was showing up on my statement I was getting no 4-digit confirmation number.
I contacted Paypal asking them to cancel the confirmation process and refund the £1.00 (I may be a tight Yorkshireman but there was no way a massive company like Paypal was keeping my £1!!! haha)
Like you I just kept on getting instructions to do something I could do.
After many, many e-mails to Paypal's customer "service" department (each time replied to by a different person), I finally lost it, swore a lot and demanded my problem was passed to a manager.
The next day the process was cancelled and I had my £1 back!
Paypal then asked to take part in a "customer service questionnaire", and oh boy was I brutally honest".

Now, I don't know if YB have sorted the whole £1.50 charge mess yet as I haven't used Paypal since up until 5 minutes ago, so I'll have to wait and see until it's processed and see what my online statement says.

Just to add to this thread I check my Yorkshire bank statements today & have had 8 x £1.50 applied to paypal payments since early February. Bank told me to contact paypal who said it was not their fault & to fax my statements to Ireland or post them so they could investigate. My paypal account is showing no charges. Phone YB back & said I was not paying 60p per page x 7 or posting my statements in this age of fraud & as it was their fault & must have had hundreds of these complains I expect them to sort it out. Instantly started filling in the forms to refund me. Pretty obvious that they are trying to fob customers off & hoping as it is small amounts most people won't bother. Not the MSE followers!!!! So insist they sort it out, they are putting on the charge not the retailer, their card is at fault.

As Guy Anker correctly stated in his MSE news article, these problems are not the fault of Clydesdale or Yorkshire Banks. There are a couple of things we are aware of relating to payments with the new Debit Mastercards, the BIN issue is one, the "Paypal issue" is another.

We tested the new cards with Paypal before launching with no issues, however, after that Paypal made some changes that triggered this new problem - we are are not the only banks to be experiencing it. A 'fix' means that there shouldn't have been any issues since 26th February and we're working behind the scenes to permanently resolve it so you, our customers, don't get these fees.

Branches have been made aware of what action they should take. But put simply, if you are incorrectly charged up front (don't forget some places charge for card use no matter what) then the vendor is your first port of call. If the fee is applied by us and you think it's incorrect then contact us, we'll see what's what and where appropriate we'll refund the fees.

    Hope this clears things up.

The clydesdale certainly do an inst.nt access saving account with a debit card so I would imagine the YB do also, as you have a passbook it sounds like an older account. You might need it changed to their new instant savings account.

hi Jen_31, savagej is right if you have a YB Passbook Account then you won't have a card. If it's a card-based savings account you want then the account is called "Instant Savings Account".

So, on the basis of the last post, just go into your branch and ask them to let you change your account. Remember, no slapping. ;):D
