I'm surprised that the Post Office is having trouble with it, the little stickers showing the accepted card types says 'Streamline' on it, and I'd be very surprised if a big payment system like Streamline hadn't updated their systems.
  • having registered my card just after Christmas i was spared the embarasment met by others standing at the head of a very long queue with a shopping trolly full of presents, however i have had issues where i cannot settlle my account with my Barcalycard or halifax account, quite simply they dont want to know.

Halifax does recognise it as a Mastercard Debit card, but tells you it will not process the payment and to contact your issuing bank!

Anyone who has tried to make a Paypal transaction using this new card beware!
Paypal will see this card as a foreign credit card and add a currancy conversion charge!
I have been in touch with Paypal who fobbed me off with "contact your isssuing bank", the larger the transaction the bigger the fee.
perhaps its time to change banks!

I've just received a response to my complaint to Clydesdale Bank. Here's a bit of the response:

"We are working closely with the companies to rectify the matter as soon as possible. In the meantime until the problem is resolved retail branches have been advised that as a contingency we must offer to order customers a replacement Maestro card."
  • Great to read this thread as I have had a nightmare trying to track down the mystery charges on my clydesdale account. All worked fine when I was on Maestro and now I am getting charged each time I use paypal as they treat it as a foreign payment. They have been extremely unhelpful and even wrote to me saying it wasn't a charge by them but by paypal, which is incorrect. Am hoping to get refunded for charges, will see what happens.
  • go to the bank. Tell them you want to return to a maestro card. They'll tell you you can't. Tell then you can as you can't use the card as you did your old maestro card (Paying credit cards online, using it in the post office etc.) despite their leaflet which claims you can. If they persist ask them to contact someone higher up as they clearly don't know. I contacted the helpline first who told me I could do this but when I got to the bank they didn't know anything about it. Don't take no for an answer.

They asked you to change. You changed on the strength of the written information they gave you which is untrue and therefore puts them in a difficult position.

They can issue you a maestro card. You will be inconvenienced by being without any card for six days or so. You will get another pin number which I suppose you can change back to your own. When that new maestro card runs out you will unfortunately be given a new Mastercard but at least by then the problems will be sorted out or you can change banks.
  • I've been with Yorkshire bank for over 25 years.

I recieved the new Mastercard Debit about a month ago.

I can't use it on Amazon, Halifax, Virgin and plenty of other sites.

    Here is the simple fact:

Yorkshire Bank should not have sent out cards that don't work. They should have made sure all the major retailers had everything in place before issuing cards.

I'll I've had from YB customer services is that 'it is the retailers fault'. Well, YB, it isn't the retailers fault, it is yours!

I'm really cheesed off and inconvenienced, but I dare say I will do what most people do by sticking with YB as I just can't be bothered to go through the hassle to move bank accounts.

YB - you have let down a lot of your customers and should be ashamed at how amateurish you appear.

Rant over (until the next time I can't pay a bill)!!

to update my difficulties: i had it "declined" in a Odeon cinema.
(it seemed to recognise it was a 'mastercard debit' card, accepted the pin, and then 'declined' it)

It would also seem Clydesdale Bank's online team now have a standard response to send in reply to queries about the card:

In response to your Secure Message dated XX/01/2010 regarding your Debit MasterCard, we are aware of a small number of retailers where our customers are experiencing difficulties using their new Debit MasterCard.

Please be assured that this is not due to a problem with your Card or the bank's systems, but is caused by the retailer not completing necessary upgrades to their systems. The bank is working closely with MasterCard to resolve these issues.

We are also aware that some on-line retailers are also applying an additional Charge for using Debit MasterCard, please note that this is out with the banks control and would advise you to take this up with the retailer directly.

Can you please supply details of the company or companies that are not accepting the card or are applying additional charges?

I hope that this has been of assistance, however should you wish more information or to discuss this further, please visit your branch in person where an advisor will be delighted to assist, if this is not possible please contact your branch in writing.

Thank you for using the Secure Messaging Service.

    Yours sincerely,

    Internet Banking WebCare Team

Whilst I am also pretty annoyed as I have recently had further problems using the card, I do have to agree with CB/YB that it is the retailers fault. It seems Mastercard International have done a pretty rubbish job at promoting the cards and getting retailers online.

I recently came back from the USA and interestingly it seems many US banks are issuing debit Mastercards. It's a real shame we only have 1 of the major clearing banks (CB/YB/NAB) who are issuing these cards in the UK as it means the bank's voice to try and push retailers to update their systems is pretty lacklustre.
  • I have had exactly the same problems with random 1.50 charges. Curiously I made a couple of separate purchases from Amazon, and only one was subject to the charge.

I have spoken to the bank on a few occasions, who at first denied any problem, then blamed the retailers, and told me to inform them.

I have spoken to all the retailers, and non of them know anything about it and blame the bank.

I don't know who's fault it is. The only person I know who definitely isn't responsible, is me, but I'm the one who's paying, and being inconvenienced.

Very poor form. Been with Clydesdale for nearly 20 years, even though I now live in England, always been very good, never considered leaving. It says a lot about a company; how they handle something like this, and the head in the sand approach is annoying. A simple hands up, sorry, we're working on it, would of been a much better route to take.
  • I was planning on opening an account with clydesdale, does anyone have any update on this card issue?

    had it been fixed?
