Once all the issues are resolved with these cards I reckon it'll have been a good move in the long run. Who wouldn't prefer a card with better international acceptance and better purchase protection?

But does it really offer any greater purchase protection: you don't get the protection offered by a credit card.

At the end of the day, the banks will be more content if you use a card without protection abroad (as it's inevitably cheaper than having the risk of the protected purchases) so the 'international acceptance' is of limited real value: you're still better off paying with a credit card and paying it off (the only other factor to take into account is the fee of transactions abroad but these MC debit cards still have them too).

I think it offers chargeback along the same lines as Visa cards (the schemes do vary slightly), so if like say with Farepak"when it went bust people who paid with Maestro had no recourse and lost their money. However, if they had used a Mastercard and the goods were not delivered then they would likely get their money back as did people with Visa cards.
  • If it's any help my mum banks with Yorkshire Bank & has got the Mastercard Debit Card, she went in to the branch yesterday and questioned the extra charges for paypal payments. They are in the process of stopping these as paypal is the only company they have experienced problems with, but in the mean time if she takes statements in they will refund the charges.
  • im off to tenerife and was looking to use this card as a prepaid card, any reports if this would be ok and am i going to get any of these hidden charges, anybodys experiences would be great
  • Oh no, Yorkshire Bank are sending me a replacement card for the one I've lost, I really hope they don't send me one of these!
  • Thought I would add my experience to this thread.
Me and my wife have been with the Yorkshire bank for 28 years, been buying stuff on ebay using Paypal for a very long time with not a single problem UNTIL
Yorkshire bank issued me and my wife with the new Master card to replace our maestro/switch card, that we didn't ask for.
Looking at the last two bank statements we have had about 12 transactions using paypal that the bank has charged us an average of £1.50 per transaction.
We complained to paypal ,they have been very good with correspondence and we have sent them a detailed list of the times we where screwed. They have started an investigation into the matter and have said they will apply for a refund.
    So we wait...............
One thing for sure is the bank will be making big bucks just imagine all the people
maybe thousands, hundreds of thousands of unsuspecting paypal users who are getting screwed £1.50 EVERY time they make a purchase !
I bet they will take their time sorting this particular problem out.
We have been ripped and we are not happy,I will be going into the bank and demanding our maestro cards back.
I have also had problems trying to pay credit card bills over the phone with this new card and they won't accept it,had to revert to sending the credit card company a cheque! ended up cancelling the credit card account because it's a hassle to pay it,what a shame it's not their fault.
    These card are bad news.

Clydesdale Bank and Yorkshire Bank both charge "2.75% of transaction value. Min £1.50"

"These fees and limits apply if you use a card where the card transaction is made with a supplier based overseas."

PayPal (Europe) S.à r.l. & Cie, S.C.A. is based in Luxembourg.

If you read the article above you will notice PayPal are aware of the issue. Despite being based in Luxembourg, PayPal still process transactions in Sterling, therefore no fee should apply.

The issue appears to be with merchant's not updating their BIN records. The merchants are treating the cards as non-Sterling, therefore incurring a £1.50 charge on the banks end.

  • Hi I am having the worst time of my life with my mastercard and paypal. Firstly when I got my new card which I didn't request I realised iwould need to change the card with my paypal account and was told it would charge £1 and I would get 4 codes on my bank statement which I would need to enter to canfirm the card. The only thing showing on my statement was a total charge of £2.50 and no codes that was in December and I am still trying to confirm it.
I have just been sent an email saying they need a fax of a photo I D and a copy of my credit card statement showing the last 4 digits of my card. I did buy something having added the card but got charged £ 1.50 which has just been refunded along with £ 1.50 I was originaly charged when adding the card, but I am still owed £ 1 back when I can confirm the card, but this cannot be done without the codes mentioned and they cant do it manually without the faxed statement they want which I cant give them as its not a credit card,as I have told them on several occasions. I have sent them my bank statement on 30th dec.
I cant believe this company can be so useless. I have told them what I need, and that I have been with them for years .My bank has told me that some companies have not updated their systems even though they have been given plenty of notice.

P.S. the item I subsequently bough which I was charged £1.50 was bought from a UK seller in the UK.
Everything was much better with the maestro card I had originally.
