Product Recall? Plum climbing frames

  • It is late and I've got to go to bed. Could someone please call Consumer Direct tomorrow and advise on what to do in regards to the warranty.

It does seem to me that Plum want these back urgently for some reason, so I would speak to CD and find out of there is a UK arm of the warranty company - and if not, how a british company can sell a product without the mark or the warranty advertised - especially if they still have these warranties on products currently on sale.

For this reason I'd say to chase Plum for a full replacement instead and send them the letter. I'd not state it is 'loss of bargain' as you have your goods but they have sold you a product with a 12 year warranty - but the warranty may of been null and void anyway.

Let me know if you call and I'll post back here tomorrow. Long day and doing VAT return all night so brain is now numb!!

HRG rang today and offered me a replacement Meerkat play frame or £233.

Waiting to get reply to my e-mail, from consumerdirect.gov.uk then I'll try BBC Watchdog.
  • Have just come off the phone with Plum Products, who assure me Argos have taken it over themselves and it is nothing to do with them, when I questioned the 12 year warranty, she told me that was with the manufacturer - Backyard Adventures in the USA.
So, would these be the people we should approach?
  • Backyard Adventures have places all over the Uk and have a play centre called the Meridian grande that has monkey bars for £599, this seems like a fair substitute!!

Spoke to 'consumer direct.gov' and the lady there seemed to think Argos were doing the right thing under the Sale of Goods Act. If I wanted to I could write to Argos to complain but she didn't seem hopeful.

I've just contacted BBC Watchdog through their website and explained the situation.

Suggest everone does the same and they may investigate!

My wife noticed the local play group has one of the same play centres and she told them of the situation. They hadn't received any recall notice so they are not happy at all.

Why have Plum washed their hands of it? Can I ask if you have questioned this with CD? Have a look on the consumeragctiongroup website to see if there is anyone there with the same problem.

Backyard Playsets are in the UK, the link on the US website takes you to this page for UK: http://www.climbingframesuk.com/

  • I'm getting increasingly peeved by this now.

I went on the previous posts link at climbingframesuk.com looking for any info on the faulty playsets (found nothing) but navigated thru the blog that they have and then the FAQ'S where I found this:

"Q: How should I maintain my set?
A: A playset is a large wooden structure that requires maintenance. There are many customers whose playsets last for years as a result of simple steps taken to ensure the wood's longevity. The wood on your playset comes with a thin coat of stain that provides uniform coloration. Stain does not protect wood, however. Most customers have the best results when they sand and stain their wood then seal it with an oil-based sealant. In order to maintain your warranty you must maintain the wood and inspect it monthly. Remember, stain is for color and sealant is for protection. Your play set should be re-stained annually."

I have done ALL OF THIS with plenty of T.L.C because I want the things I buy to last! My warranty is for 12 years. Can I have a replacement now please!
  • Can you post on their blog? Or do theyt have a facebook page that you can post on?
  • They do have a facebook page, at the bottom of their ad there is an option to go to their facebook page, maybe we should be publicly asking them the warranty questions
  • I am worried now, I have a plum frame but have not received a letter, think mine was bought around 2006. May be being thick but can someone explain what a swing arm is for me please? How can I check if my frame is included?
    Thanks
