So, you think it is alright to con someone who can't be arsed to figure out they are being conned?

Can I use this as an excuse in a court of law?

"I didn't rape her M'lud, she was so relaxed with the drink that she couldn't be arsed to stop me".

"Ok M'lud, I did break into his house and steal his TV and DVD Recorder, but you can't blame me if he can't be arsed to stay in an guard them".

"Yes M'lud, I did run over the child and kill him, but the little b*gger couldn't be arsed to get out of my way".

The "Can't Be Arsed Act" 2010

1.0 No man shall be guilty of a crime if he believes his victim couldn't be arsed to stop himself being a victim of the crime.

1.1 Anyone deemed to be "can't be arsed" shall be regarded as fair game for any criminal"

Eh? Are you really comparing a supermarket pricing boxes of matches with excuses for rape, theft and murder?

You may think Tescos are a big bad supermarket, and I'm not saying they're always squeaky clean, but in the example you gave I don't think the woman was conned. As I said earlier, in your example the woman was given the option of buying one box or four boxes. She was given the price for both and she chose one of the options.
It is not for Tescos to tell her which one to buy but as long as they gave her the options then it's up to her to choose the one she wanted.

Of course, this whole debate may be completely academic. For all we know she realised that the multipack was more expensive but bought it anyway for convenience.

  • my only known overcharge of an offer was a couple of weeks ago in morrison, the shelf said £1 a bottle, but after reading a thread on mse checked my receipt and had been charged £1.50 for imperial leather snug as a bug bath vanilla, so now taking the mse members advice and watching the scanner result of price being charged as closely as i did the shelf label. i live a distance from quite a few of the shops i go to so can't easily nip back to point out the overcharge, so will do it from now on at the time in the shop ( i guess at customer services if the till staff unable to sort it).
    nov grocery challenge, £.227.69/300, 9/25 nsd: , 7 Cmo, 10 egm.
Me, 10 yo dd, and the dog. all food and drinks, in and out, plus household shopping.
  • LOL! Some of you people in here make me laugh :P *Wipes tears from eyes* A supermarket pricing error is not the same severity as killing a child or rape. Yes, it's being used as an example, but wowzers, could it be a worse one? :)

Anyway, have to say that I never check my till receipt. Probably because I never pay much attention to prices of stuff in Tescos. I think I shall start, though.
  • I went to Home Bargains today and spent nearly £22, when I got home I checked my receipt to find they had charged me twice for a box of Earl Grey tea priced at 89p even though I had only bought one.
Anyway after some thought I rang and explained that the girl on the till must have scanned it once thinking it charge and then scanned it again because they were directly underneath each other.
I said I wasn't concerned so much about the 89p but I thought they needed to have it pointed out, the lady said that's ok, what we need to do is check the amount of boxes they have against the amount sold and could I ring back about 5 o clock when the store is closed of customers. I rang back at exactly 5 three times but no-one answered.
I am annoyed really as I think I was told to ring at that time because they knew no-one would be there,
Like I said it's not the 89p at all, I just wish they were straight with customers.
Oh well that will teach me in future to check my receipt.
  • get overcharged almost weekly at tesco extra.

a quick question about the tesco "double the difference" policy - does it not apply to online grocery orders? my partner's mum bought 4 bottles of linoti pinot grigio, advertised at £3.99 on the website, but on checking her delivery, noticed they were charged at at 7.99 each. she called the helpline to query and got refunded the difference, not double the difference, despite asking for double the difference. is that correct???

overcharged twice this week, first in Morissons charged for 3 of an item when I only bought 2, refunded at customer services, then next day at aldi, charged for 2 of an item, when only bought 1, refunded at till; I think this must happen a lot and boost supermarket profits - always check your receipt before you leave the supermarket
  • Just noticed this thread, I had a conversation with a friend of mine and I always check my receipt, he scoffed at me and said life's too short, I pointed out that last year collectively it was over £100.00 in overcharges and this year it has passed that amount in October.

He called earlier today to say he checked his receipt and was overcharged by £4.75 now he feels sick that he never checked.....a fool and his money.

Another problem is when the promotion sells out, the promotion point of sale banners are still there and some nearly identical item is put in its place fooling a lot of people at the tills

Wish Sainsburys had double the difference, I would be doing O.K
  • When did Tesco start giving double the difference back again? I am sure they stopped doing that for a while?

What had probably happened is that either the offer ended between her ordering and delivery or she has had a substitution, that is why you only got the difference rather than a double difference.

Every week I would be overcharged in Tescos. To the point that eventually I started a dossier about it to inform trading standards. I doubt it did any good but it made me feel more proactive.

As for putting stuff in the wrong place on the shelf so that different flavours/varieties that aren't included in any special offer are inadvertantly purchased. This isn't an error of the shelf staker, these are instructions which come directly from headoffice. Shelf stakers follow a planogram, which tells them what to put where.

Tescos are the worst culprit for underhand practices.

The customer service staff in what used to be my local store certainly knew me!

Always, always check your receipt before leaving the store.
