how often do you get overcharged by the supermarkets / do you check your till reciept

Options
i have noticed lately that practically every time i buy stuff in the supermarket i am overcharged for something

it is usually something that is on offer when i check my reciept i have been charged full price and have to go back to the till and ask them to sort it

yesterday i bought a loaf of hovice sliced bread from the co op , along with some other items , there were the big orange and white signs in the bread section announcing that hovis was only 90 p , i double checked shelf edge price tickets all said 90p , when i checked my reciept i had been charged £1.36 , it meant asking the cashier to correct it , she tried telling me the ofer was now over , i mean come on

tesco local last week i bought bottle of wine was overcharged by £1.75 . again was charged fullprice not offer price

week before tesco superstore 3 wines for £10 , except in all the bottles gathered together in the fridge one variety of wine was not in the offer ,
meaning i was charged full price for all 3 bottles , this has happened twice meaning a trip to customer services and a trip down the isle to point out 'my' mistake

tesco week before that cereal , honey nut clusters should have been £2.00 was charged £3.65 , didnt notice that till i was home so didnt go back to the shop

been overcharged in sainsburies also recently ,

whats going on ?

it just makes me think it must be a way of getting more money out of us , sainsburies i must admit gave me £5.00 compensation twice , at customer services , not sure tesco would do the same

I check mine every time I shop. Been at the receiving end of Tesco's mistakes far too many times in the past to be complacent at any store now. Tesco are legendary in their persistent overcharging errors.
  • i was starting to wonder if it was just me , if its regular thing happening how can they get away with it?

Just for a bit of balance, I usually shop in Asda or Morrisons and I must admit that I check my receipt every time but haven't been overcharged for quite a while in either shop.

Maybe I'm lucky, or maybe I'm just not checking properly ;)

Regarding the comment about Tesco having a range of wines on offer at 3 for £10 and putting one item amongst them that was not in the offer:
They do the same with soups. Occasionally, they have an offer on Heinz Classic Range soups (5 for £2, say)
You automatically go along the shelf taking one can of each of the flavours you like, except amongst them, there is always one row of a flavour that is not in the Classic range. The tins look almost identical, it just does not say Classic on it.
Of course, if you select that can amongst your five you pay full price for the lot.

Similarly, Tesco did a promotion of 4 cans of Branston Beans for £1.10 a few months ago. The posters were set out all along the tinned veggie aisle. I picked up a 4-pack and went to the till with it and it did not qualify - you had to buy 4 separate tins to get the offer but it only told you that on the single-pack price ticket. I got them to change the tins at the checkout, but how many other people would have picked up the 4-pack and not noticed what they were being charged?
  • Tesco are bad for over charging but saying that last few times its been better abd i have had iteams free and a refund as this was the policy at the time.

But with regards to shelf edge labels being wrong shops should dislplay the right price which tradding standards do check on from time to time but they are under no obligation to give you that iteam at the price most stores will and rightly so its there mistake but they are within there rights to refuse

i also shop in morrisons , and agree have not been 'stung' by them, i am beginning to think it is an underhand way of getting us to pay more for stuff , by some supermarkets ,not just an odd mistake

  • I find that sainsburys have got terrible for overcharging. Only the other week i was charged twice for some dishwasher tablets. I checked my receipt later that day and spotted the mistake. When i went back to complain the lady at customer services got really funny and said i should have checked my receipt straight away, and she would give me a refund as a goodwill gesture!! I shop there every week for gods sake, and i haven't time to stand there and check every product! It pees me off that these supermarkets think they can rip us off time and time again! This also isn't the first time sainsburys have ripped me off!!

To be fair to her, she only has your word for it that you bought one and were charged twice. From her perspective, you've been home and back, so you could have had two items and are trying to pull a fast one by getting a refund on one. (Please don't think that I'm doubting your story, but I'm just trying to get you to see if from her point of view.) As she doesn't know for sure that what you're saying is true then she can only put a refund down as a goodwill gesture.

Yes, they shouldn't be making these mistakes, but if you know that they've 'ripped you off' in the past then surely it would make sense to have a quick check of your receipt before you leave to pick up any major mistakes and you'll be able to get them rectified.

i always check my receipt before leaving any supermarket. I am overcharged ALOT when shopping. Even when i bought slippers for ds the other day in a shoe shop. Checking the receipt is just a habbit I got into after shopping in sainsburys alot. But tesco and asda are just as bad. Less mistakes in morrisons but they dont compensate either so i dont expect them to make mistakes!!
