Have you tried putting a couple of ripe apples in with them? Apples seem to make all other fruit ripen fairly quickly.

Otherwise peel and poach gently in some lightly sugared water. The person (in other pear thread) who said to try melted chocolate poured over the top of poached pears is quite right - Pears Belle Helene mmmmmmm!

    Good Luck!
  • As above but with a banana: they give off a gas called "ethylene", which stimulates fruit to ripen.

  • I had the same problem recently, as they had lots reduced in asda, so brought 3 bags full :o

Got them home then thought what shall I do with them

I ended up making an upside down pear cake, which was easy and tasted really nice.

Just made a normal sponge cake mixture, sliced up the pears and layered them on the bottom of the cake tin, then poured the cake mixture on top and cooked as normal sponge cake.

When cooked tip out of tin and sit on plate so pears are on the top of the cake, serve with custard or cream, was yummy :D

Deilia's pickled pears are great - make from now to October to be ready for Christmas. I did them last year and they were delish - also the opinion of my mother in law who had a jar as a visitor's present

You can use all wine vinegar or all cider vinegar if that is more convenient.
  • OH chops them up and freezes the for smoothies.

    Hi,

Just lately we have been eating pears as a dessert.

Chop them up into big chunks, maybe even in half but missing the pips..then sprinkle them wth ground cinnamon. Melt some brown sugar and add the pears so they become soft and caramalised. Then serve hot with vanilla ice cream or thick fresh cream. so yummy!
