Pears are notorious for being underripe one day, and rotting on the tree the next. Our tree tends to give us an abundance of pears every two years, and nothing in between.
If you hold a pear (on the tree) and pull very gently, it will come off if it is ripe, and will resist if its not.0 -
Pears can start as early as August or run to the end of October, but they do have to be picked when they're ripe so the birds don't get them.
When I had pear trees, all we did was lift the fruit gently and if it came away from the tree, then it was ripe. If we had to tug, then it wasn't, and if it was on the floor, we were too late.
My favourite pear recipe is an upside down cake with half a cherry in the middle of each half pear where the pips would've gone. (Same as pineapple upside down cake, but with pears.)
You're lucky to have a pear tree that fruits. Good luck with it in the future too.spendy/she/her ***DEBT-FREE DATE: 11 NOVEMBER 2022!*** Highest debt: £35k (2006) MY WINS: £3,541 CASH; £149 Specsavers voucher; free eye test; goody bag from Scottish Book Trust; tickets to Grand Designs Live; 2-year access to Feel Amazing App (worth £100); Home Improvement & Renovation Show tickets; £50 to spend on chocolate; Harlem Globetrotters tickets; Jesus Christ Superstar tickets + 2 t-shirts; Guardians of the Galaxy goody bag; Birmingham City v Barnsley FC tickets; Marillion tickets; Dancing on Ice tickets; Barnsley FC v Millwall tickets0 -

Has anyone frozen poached pears? I have so many I can't use them at once.0
-
My OH came home earlier this week with a bag of pears. They don't appear to be ripening at all and remain as green as the day they were born.
Any ideas how I can use them up??
