I can`t help thinking of the number of well insulated garages up and down the country because of this great £1 a roll offer.

The rolls of insulation are supposed to go in the loft. :rotfl:

Argh, I missed this offer

Anyone know where I can get it cheap ? is this offer likely to be run again ?

National Power (as against Power Gen, Scottish Power. Scottish Hydro & British Energy/EDF) was privatised with the highest proportion of CO2 producing coal power stations. As such it is now lumbered with the requirement to mitigate the damage to the world it is causing.

At the weekend it got criticised for giving away millions of low energy compact fluorescent light bulbs to beat the deadline before its mitigation requirement goes up in line with the UK commitment to save 20% by 2020.
(Giving away lightbulbs might be cheaper than building another power station, so provides no hard incentive to the company to cut its CO2 output - they would have done it anyway!)

So your guess is as good as mine, but I think we will be seeing more subsidised offers like this in the future. "Which?" in its January edition sees the average family being "taxed" (my word for the Renewable Heat Incentive) an extra 480 GBP by 2020, via its energy supplier to pay for carbon reduction subsidies from insulation to photovoltaics.

(The "Which?" conclusion is that spending 5 - 10K for a family home might keep energy costs stable; the do-nothing option would mean increases of 1000 a year (detatched) to 425 a year (flat)).

The unemployed "boomerang" kids have got to live somewhere.

(and in your dotage, they have got to put their "demographic time bomb" somewhere - I think I would prefer the garage to the old folks home:rolleyes:)

Not sure what size our hatch is exactly but at a guess i'd say our hatch is 2 ft x 2 ft so if you mean 22inch x 22 inch think you'll be ok (if you mean 22square inches as the product of two dimension then nope - make a bigger hatch!) .

For us it was a 2 person plus broom effort to get our 100mm rolls we ordered in the loft..one hanging out the loft hatch (me) and one down below sliding the roll up the ladder and shove with a broom. I assume the 170mm are similarly sized as the coverage is smaller). Wasn't so much a problem of weight as a problem of having something to grip onto that didn't tear off as it comes open ended. You'll see what i mean when you get it but gloves are essential if you don't want to itch for days (sorry mrs b!)! The knauf earthwool stuff i bought last summer was much easier to handle as it was completely sealed.

Would leave the old insulation put..the more the merrier!

I'm waiting for warmer weather when we won't lose all the heat through the loft hatch before i unroll mine (that and i've still some clearing out to do).

I was making the point of people ordering 30 odd rolls at £1 each, which is a great offer, but upon delivery they have to store it somewhere, hence the garage.
Where it will probably sit for ages, instead of getting it installed in the loft.
No room for cars or boomerangs, garage full of loft insulation.

If they don't measure the first length required in the roofspace. Cut that off before you attempt to take the complete roll through the hatch. Take it up in two pieces as the roll will now have a much smaller diameter. Do the same with subsequent rolls. Simples.

Agree with Andrew I'd leave it be - particularly if its loose lay which will be a dirty job to remove. Just put the new stuff on top and whatever you do don't stuff it all the way down into the eaves because that will cut down your ventilaition and then you'll have a condensation problem. Be careful about "burying" your electrics up there. Two reasons - first is access which is a minor consideration but still worth mentioning. The second is more important. Most domestic UK lighting circuits are loaded a long way under capacity, particularly with a protected circuit, so are usually not a problem because even when de-rated for insulation they are generally still safe.

Cables for Electric Showers and Immersion Heaters are usually run near their maximum capacity and when buried in insulation its possible they will overheat which will shorten their life and could be dangerous. So don't bury these.

    Cheers

I was curious on the size of my loft hatch so measured it earlier..narrowest dimension is actually 23 inch so i think 22x22 inch should be ok although might be tight with ladder in place.

can you remember how much clearance you had down the sides of the rolls when you were putting them up?
