There's been a few threads on this..one already today in this home/diy section of the forum (assume alot of posters coming through to here from the newsletter!).

Without boarding you would lay 100mm (4inch) insulation between the ceiling joists and then 170mm (6 and 3/4 inch) in the other direction across the tops of ceiling joists and 100mm insulation.

For a storage area/ walkway to access tanks etc to use the full 270mm insulation you would need to raise the joists with extra timbers in a part of the loft (near the hatch makes most sense).

Alternatively you can get an insulation board for storage areas (a flooring with layer of insulation attached) though it is pricey. Or just put 100mm under the boards and leave it at that. For a small storage area it probably won't make a huge difference per year in your heating bill.

The effectiveness of insulation is reduced if you squash it down so you want to avoid doing so if you possibly can.
Download the Rockwool insulation guide : here

There are a few tips on boarding and storage on the Rockwool website if you take a look at installation guides for Rockprime blown loft insulation. It applies to the Granulate rather than the roll product, but equally applies.
  • Isn't this RockWool stuff molten slag, a bye product of the metal refining industry, that has been put through a giant candy floss machine?

The glass stuff, such as the light green one made from our surplus of wine bottles, tends to be softer and more springy.

Hi, i work for Rockwool and would just like to clarify that Rockwool is not a byeproduct of steel industry, Rockwool is made of volcanic rocks, we use small amounts of other materials to reduce the temperature to melt the rock and hence our energy burden. few things to remember:

In its lifetime, a typical Rockwool insulation product manufactured and installed in the UK, can save over 100 times more primary energy and CO2 than is required for its production, transport, and should it be necessary, disposal at the end-of-life
The energy and CO2 balances become positive only a few months after installation
When insulating hot pipes for industrial processes, the energy and CO2 payback can be less than 24 hours and the return on invested energy and CO2 can be more than 10,000 fold

Volcanic or diabase rock is constantly being renewed due to volcanic activity and there is 38,000 times more than the group worldwide extracts in a year.

One thing to remember also is stone wool insulation is one of the only insulations that can be easily recycled at the end of its life and our Rockwool is also 97% recyclable. We work very hard to ensure the quality and credentials of our products.

Having got some of the Npower/Build Center loft insulation, what a disappointment. I have insulated lofts before but never have I seen such poor material to work with as this Npower Rockwool. For one thing, it is very fragile. It's OK if you are unwrapping the roll and letting it unroll across your loft, but if you have to manoeuvre it in any way, it very easily disintegrates. It also has a lot of lumps of fused glass in it and it is terribly irritable to any exposed skin. It is supposed to be for DIY but I would not recommend it.

Hi Stepm, this should not be the case with Rockwool as it is a denser product than most insulations, also, as this is made from rock and not glass, it would be strange to get fused glass in it, i would check what product you had recieved. If there is a problem, you should check on the situation with your store. The quality of this is the same as the normal stock, it is just being subsidised by npower.

When I did my place 30 years ago, I used a flower pot when I made the hot water tank look like a Michelin Man, I've had no increase in problems with the Immersion heater under the flower pot since.

Back then, when doing the loft with what ever was cheapest at the time, I do remember a batch of pink coloured stuff that had fused lumps in it, though I cannot remember the brand name.
What colour is this Rockwool stuff?.

Next year, when I get a round tuit (?), and upgrade to the newly advised thickness, when there will be wires underneath, I will need to use something that can be rolled back to get at the wires (I think I will need to make a plan of where the wires are too)

Finally I'm just back from a visit to my in-law's. They have recently got their home done for free (Over 75?). I got volunteered to try and find the missing Xmas decorations in the loft.

1980's house with a roof supported by those trusses with an inbuilt "W" to strengthen the triangle of rafters. The insulation was beige soft bouncy glass (?) that sticks to your jeans. I was not impressed by the care taken:
There are tanks on platforms, to spread the weight, built up from the rafters and the supply pipes were glinting copper through the insulation at the corners and where two pipes has been run side by side.
In places I could slide my hand down the gaps in the insulation to touch the (warm!) plasterboard. No care had been taken to maintain ventilation at the eves, in fact the roll had been tucked in below the sarking (under slate) felt.

I think the message is - when you are not the customer you get what you are given.

I've just been on the web site as I didn't get on in time last week... it's still available at £1/roll... fill your boots! Delivery not til January though.

I used Rockwool previously in an old victorian house, made hell of a difference. Think its better than glass fibre just normally costs a lot more. Easy to use, just wear gloves!
