I have just taken delivery of my system and I'm about to set it up. I don't really want to register it and pay £5 a month for 9 months after the 3 month trial, I intend to modify the number it dials to my mobile. However as part of the set up it looks like it requires a Property ID number which you get from registering, is there any way round this?
You only need a property number during the trial or "paid for" period so your identified when you call BT. If your not calling BT (ie your changing your numbers) then you don't need one.

Why don't you register, get your three months and property ID then cancel at the end of the three month trial?

Not sure really, I thought at first it was a 12 month contract (i.e. first 3 months free). If it is not, I may register it but don't really want to get charged for the calls it makes either, just calling my mobile will alert me, I don't really need much more than that. Have you found the trial useful?

I checked the T&C's and you have to give 28 days notice so you might as well take the three months and cancel after two.

I have not tried it yet, I have set my system up but when I tried to register last night it kept rejecting my serial number, I called today and they said they would sort it out and email me the detail....... still waiting.

PS, I asked about the 0870 number for support and the alarm calls its 8p a minute. There is an option to log all events for online monitoring (eg when people get home) this could add up a bit, BT sure know how to get every last penny!

Some info on the alarm, its a Visonic system and very good. From what I read about the best DIY wireless you can get.

The system you have quoted is completely self-install for DIY. It is a dumbed down Visonic Powermax system that BT commissioned (from Visonic) for them to sell, packaged under the BT brand. BT then use a third party "alarm receiving centre" at a cost to you of £5 per month in order for you to receive alerts.

The Visonic brand is quite high quality. Professional installers don't often fit DIY kits (if at all), but if you do a search online for for "Powermax" you will come up with about 3 companies who sell the product on line, one of which seems to offer professional installation at an additional cost. I would say though, that for the cost, if you then pay extra for installation, you may as well get a professional hard wired system installed instead.

Also I have discovered you can use other companies to monitor this alarm.

    One example would be Intermac:
    http://www.intamac.com/homepage/index.htm

Intermac do BT's monitoring for them but you can go direct for the same £5 a month, they offer some extras too, like having 6 contacts instead of BT's 3, being able to add a camera (to answer an earlier question, you can't add a camera if BT do the monitoring), this feature costs £2.50 extra a month. You can have safe home and get texts when the kids come home (told no extra charge) and a Response and patrol (again extra fee) where they will send out a guard in the even of an alarm.
Even without these paid extras its worth going direct just for the extras that are free. They are sending me a PDF with full details.

There must be other companies who do monitoring for these too as its a dumbed down Visonic Powermax system there must be a company that monitors Visonic systems? I will have to keep checking.

I understand the Visonic system allows you to listen in on your home following an alert (two way voice) which is active on the BT alarm but just not supported by BT so may work with other companies.

I've ordered one of these and was interested in getting my hands on a wireless (real) bellbox too.

Does anybody know where the cheapest place is to get one of these?

I'd prefer a solar one and notice that both 'Yale' and 'Response' do wireless solar bellboxes for their wireless alarm systems. Does anybody know if either (or both) would be compatible with the BT system?

Intamac sell the external wireless, but wired to the mains, bellbox for £99.99 + £15 p&p:

It can also be found on eBay (search for "vp1000 external") for just under £90.

I'm convinced, I've ordered one, now just to work out how to set it up.

Has anyone seen any third-party websites or resourses on getting the best from this system?

Thanks for making me spend more money (again!)

  • I've installed mine and Mrs DOTS is not too happy with the wires (Phone and Mains) that are hanging down from the box. Any ideas on the best way to hide them apart from channeling into the wall? If I cant get it looking neater she may make me take it all out again!!

Crikey all that effort for grief!

    Help needed and appreciated

    Nice to save.

I have been looking into bell boxes too. I have found nothing to say other makes are compatible however best prices I have found are:

eclipsecomputers £82.19 inc VAT (free shipping orders over £75 inc vat)

    gx-security £75.20 inc VAT (shipping £3.99+vat)

mygard £79.95 inc vat (free shipping on all items)
