Pc world fixed pc?

Well first of all I took it to PC World at the suggestion of some one on the Techie forum .
First up no competent technical person on this forum would EVER recommend taking it to PC world. they have a well established track record of causng more problems than they solve and charging extortionate fees.
from the sounds of it your drive was partitioned to C drive (main one) and D drive (recovery partition used to restore your PC operating system to a good state if anything ever goes wrong)
it seems PC have erased your recovery partition and done a bog standard OS reinstall.
no you will have not lost space but have lost the ability to easily fix your PC yourself if ever it goes wrong in future (was probably much more useful to you than the extra 3-4 GB space you've now got). No you won't be able to get it back now that its gone.0 -
If you to be sure as to whether you actually had a Recovery Partition in the first place, you will need to provide of with clear details of your PC. Make, model etc
If you did, it will provide you with a strong argument against PC World.0 -
I think your best bet is to take it to your nearest repair shop for them to sort. I know pc world are currently charging £30 to fix this issue.
Oh dear! - bad advice given.

Nonsense. A single Tech could be doing ten of these at the same time. Just because it takes time doesn't mean the Tech is actually spending the time on the machine.
.
It doesn't matter whether they are spending actual time on the machine, the staff and costs have to be paid for whether they are working on 1 machine or 10, downtime is built into the price of any business, they may have only had one to do that day.
No I don't work in pcw group
3 hours at £29/hr is reasonable, you won't find many trades that charge less. You would be hard pushed to fix 10 random laptop faults in 3 hours.!!

The excellent PC business near me charges £40 to re-install/update XP (SP3) and restore the files to each users My Docs. They also install Nero (for DVD's) and an Antivirus. £100 seems expensive.Originally Posted by closed

I now use this re-install guide and do it myself:-

If the OP is having to install drivers when they get it back from PC World they may be better off learning how to re-install the OS and save dismantling the PC and a trip in the car. :rolleyes:Originally Posted by Oneday77

my local shop also charges a fraction of PCworld's £100.
And I'd argue it makes a huge difference whether it's 1 or 10 they're doing.
The install is mostly automatic so several can be done simultaneously. meaning the technician can do several at the same time.
If it was a labour intensive job I could understand the high charge.
But it's not, and I don't.
£100 to simply reinstall OS is almost robbery.

does your pound sign work, £40 (vat registered?) is ridiculously cheap, either they have no overheads, or are desperate for business.!!

They may be desperate (if so they've been desperate for the several years they've been in business) but I do know they're registered for VAT.
Either way it's not my concern. I just know that other places will do what PC World do for a fraction of the price.

You would not see the 'recovery' partition as a drive letter, but you would have to boot into it. The 'C:' and 'D:' would usually be 'System' (Operating system) and 'Data'.
Any 'competent' PC repair operation should check first to see if there is a recovery partition, and try to restore from there first. A full OS re-install should be a last resort. And in any case, they should have at least re-installed as the original partitions - that is basic stuff.0 -
Can some one put me out of my being very stupid misery. "does your pound sign work" Ehhhh?does your pound sign work, £40 (vat registered?) is ridiculously cheap, either they have no overheads, or are desperate for business.
£100 is a fair charge if the business carrying out the business is performing the job to a before failure status and that their staff are fully trained. If they were and equally qualified they would not be working in PC World for £17k a year or less. I don't doubt they have overheads but since the store is powered and paid for namely by product sales, repair labour is pure profit after staff pay.New PV club member. 3.99kW system.
