In that case write a letter and send it both to the store manager and their head office by recorded delivery. The HO one address it for the Chief Execs office. Otherwise you get some customer service rep that sides with the manager. CE addressed letters will be dealt with by his office and do carry more clout.
Don't get into the detail of lost drives or the like just state you paid for a service and it was incomplete, you lost a whole day sorting out their shortcomings and felt that you could not approach the store in person as you didn't thisnk you would get a fair hearing.
If you took your car into a garage after an accident and it came out with the back seats dismantled & in the boot they haven't rebuilt your car completely ;) so you wouldn't pay for a whole job.

Well put, I have to go to the retail park tomorrow to collect a christmas present so will pop in and see what they have to say. If i get no joy will then write to CE
It may sound silly but the computer is my only way of communicating properly at present and a life line for my sanity ( which has disappeared today)

Well there is no sanity on here so welcome to the fold :rotfl:
Good luck tomorrow but remember to be an :A and rise above any rubbish they try to fob you off with.
The standard service is to restore the PC and your liable to the loss of data if not backed up. They offered an improved service of backup, re-install and restore. This clearly wasn't carried out to a satifactory conclusion. Internet access these days is a fundamental function and they didn't get it working for you arfter job completion. Maybe I am being a little idealistic but I hate to see customers getting ripped off if their not aware of the whole process. I do equally stick up for retailers if customers are chancing their arm (don't worry I am pretty sure your not ;))

Sorry that I didn't see your original thread at the time. I would have talked you through as best I could.

Can't see PC World coughing up your cash.

Copying your Documents and Settings folder and re-installing Windows is the line of least resistance for them. It involves the least amount of 'hands on' technician time. Backing up doesn't involve him having to stay with the PC and reinstallation much the same. That's why they do it. Maximum cash for minimum work.

Troubleshooting in order to fix the problem takes time. They are probably under time constraints, so they back up and reinstall....and charge you £100.

The report does state reinstalled apps and drivers so it isn't complete. I know they only do the basic but that is not how they have sold it to a customer. The local college IT students would do a better job for a pie and a pint

Most recovery partitions are usually not assigned a drive letter (i.e. don't show up in My Computer) to stop people messing with them. Most likely the HDD was partitioned in half - Acer do this for example, half for the OS and half for "Data" which imo is just stupid.

It is not "stupid" to partition the drive (in half or otherwise) - I do this will all my drives now. It give you a much better chance of SAVING all your data in this sort of incident, because you can do an OS re-install and NOT lose your precious data.

£100 is reasonable, it's a business, staff have to be paid, profits made, Vat has to be paid, the costs of running a large building are considerable, backing up, installing, restoring, takes time.. They might have done a crap job, but lots of independents do a crap job too, does your pound sign work?

They can only reinstall the apps if they have the media, or a restore partition.

OP, if you want to guard against this happening again, get it as you like it, then take a backup image of the drive using maxblast, macrium reflect free etc.

Nonsense. A single Tech could be doing ten of these at the same time. Just because it takes time doesn't mean the Tech is actually spending the time on the machine.

£100 is not reasonable in my mind. Plus, doing a crap job means that they didn't even do the job as described. Do you work within the PC World group. That's the sorriest excuse for them I read in some time.

I used to work for Dixons, I will reitterate "used" to. I know the crap job a lot of the staff do and to their defence it is due to getting crap pay, little training and pressure to do what ever to turn stuff around quickly. There are some diamonds in the rough, just like diamonds they are rare though ;)
However that is no real defence to risk losing what is potentially very important information for someone.
