I've ordered my goose from a local butcher... £70 for 10 pound bird?

Does this seem excessive to anyone else?!

Seems excessive for one meal but not excessive for a decent goose if you seem what I mean... Ei personally for a really nice Christmas meal I might have been tempted to have a duck or even a really good bit of steak which would have been cheaper, but if I particularly wanted goose and a top notch one then no its not excessive IMO.

Update: collected bird last night. Price is now £82.97... for 5.5kg (12lbs) or £15/kg...
  • I got a large stuffed chicken for christmas lunch from my local butcher. £12 but fresh and good quality, not pumped with water. I stopped using the supermarket for meat after two dodgy buys, it also has no taste. Got my veg delivered in veg box and it lasts for ages unlike the supermarket veg which seems to either wilt or rot after a few days. I use the butcher for all my meat and I don't think it is much more expensive and at least it doesn't shrink away.

I always use our local butcher as the quality is far superior to Tesco. The volume per pound of fat in mince is quite something. Just out of interest I bought 500g steak mince from Tesco and 500g from butchers. I browned the two in seperate pans and the amount of fat in the Tesco was almost double that of the butchers. Also the smell off the stuff from Tesco is quite disgusting. Unfortunately I couldn't waste Tesco's so I made a meat loaf from it. Some local butchers offer discounts if you buy 10lb of a certain product, ours does for mince, steak, sausages etc. We have a local farm shop who are a wee bit more expensive than tesco but the quality, freshness and taste is far better, For instance leeks in Tesco are white and bland but in Farm Shop they are still dirty with the green leaves on, which I use all of but because they are stong in flavour I only need half. Carrots are totally different, darker orange and much sweeter. Definately use the local shops rather than Tesco.

Our Turkey from butcher was 12lb and was £34.50, and it was lovely.

I think over last 2years we tried it all.
nearby local high st has greengrocers and butchers but only go up that suberb once a month if that. Hubby thourght butchers seemed pricey.
another nearby suberb has greengrocers 2 and if im ever passing I try to pop in.

Some of the market stalls are cheap for fruit and veg and buy from them.

Tried farmers market was lovley stuff but hubby felt it was too pricey.
That was large one in city centre so might try local one in church hall.

We tried farmshop in chippenham which was nice but pricey.
The one near us is lovley but pricey so more occasional treat it has lovley cafe and daughter can feed pigs which she loves also do strawberry picking in summer.
We love it there but due to tight budget just seems too high.
I have seen a sign for another one keep meaning to try.

carboots have great stalls broughts lots there.

At the moment we but majority from supermarket.

Theres a mobile butchers called bristol meat machine thats fairly cheap.

Not sure what to do as in new year as need to keep foodbill down to £150 for 2adults, 4year old and baby who will be weaning soon which means more fruit and veg.

We dont have meat that often as pricey but we never buy cheap mince usually sainsburys taste difference 2 for £5 and only buy freedom /freerange or organic chicken.

Havent had turkey last 2years as so pricey free range small turkey £25 we got large free range chicken lidls £6.50 and largish duck for £6.99.

Definatly growing more produce in garden this year, hubby thinks we should get veg lidls and rest from sainsburys.
Would like to try new farm shop and local farmers market and see if we can get better quality as prefer quality to quantity without breaking the bank.

Hoping next xmas can order a turkey maybe, love goose but small oven wouldent fit!
Not sure could spend £82 on one but bet it was lovley.

I always buy from Donald Russell online. Can't beat the quality plus don't have to leave the house.

Also really like the Howies range from Sainsburys.

Second donald russel for burgers, very over priced.
    Kind Regards

I use local butcher for most meat, other than that I use m&s, farm shop for veg. Its so much better than supermarket stuff, lasts longer, they have never let me down.

I too would love to use local outlets, but the local 'butcher' isn't worthy of the name and working full time makes traveling arround the city to find another impossible. The farm shops/farmers markets are way out of town and even if I could afford the desel, when I have been in the past they are so overpriced that I just can't shop there. About the only thing worth going for are the eggs, but can't justify the trip just for them.
