  • I thought I would give my butcher a go but cant decide if they were expensive or not, It has just cost me £9.02 for the following
    - 8 rashers of back bacon
    - 6 ginger and spring onion fat sausgaes
    - 8 think pork breakfast suausages

    Is this expensive or cheap?

ha that is cheap! my farm shop was £17 for 4 cumberland sausages, 6 chipolatas and 6 rashers of bacon!! Not all that to be honest. Am going to try some more of their meat to see if its any better. we shall see. Their chickens (medium) are £25. Agree with othe rposter donald russell is faultless in my own experience. Their steaks are great.

I'll cast my vote for farm shops and butchers, too! What's more I'd add good old traditional bakers and greengrocers!

My local town has a proper, old fashioned baker and there is absolutely no comparison between the wonderful fresh bread they sell in there and the rubbish sold in supermarkets - and I don't mean the packaged stuff, I mean what they laughingly claim to 'bake' on the premises!

Fruit and veg, again. I have two or three greengrocers I use, all of which sell better quality fruit at lower prices, while, in season, buying from the local farms doesn't just help keep money in the local community, it saves me money and gives me better produce!

But to get back to meat - I will go well out of my way to avoid meat from any of the supermarkets with the honourable exception of Waitrose, whose meat is good, but expensive. In Kent there is a chain of butchers, called Rooks, who sell only local meat. Their produce is very well priced and I have never, ever been disappointed, despite being the fussiest badger you will ever meet.

Supermarkets may be convenient and they may save money on some things - but usually only if you ruthlessly exploit their special offers and avoid their fresh food sections! And don't get me started on supermarket 'fresh' fish!

I'll be visiting my local butchrers tomorrow. I haven't been for ages.

I did find Marks and Spencers really good for Pork Shoulder joints - but they have none (was gonna spend some vouchers). I found that my local butchers was actually cheaper than Sainsburys for some things.
  • For those in the Reading area, "Smelly Alley" (AKA Union Street ;) ) is fantastic - butchers, fishmongers and greengrocers, all practically on top of each other.

Can reward yourself with one of these as well ;)http://www.shakeaway.com/subsites/uk/menu.htm

I get a veg box mid-week and go to the grocers etc on the w/e.

Costco are also fantastic for meat and fish!

  • For anyone in the North West I highly recommend Bennetts Q Award Butchers in Bury (they have a website if you put the name in Google). They're more expensive than the Meat & Fish Hall in the market opposite, but the meat is far better quality.

can anyone recommend a butchers/ farm shop in east london/essex area.
  • And can anyone recommend any in the Bradford or Leeds area?

I've tried a couple, both of which were superb, but very expensive.
  • I buy my potatoes from my local farm shop, this week I bought a 25kg sack of King Edwards for £6!:money:
I also buy my dove yeast form there too, as its the only place I can find it!
  • I discovered my butcher a few months ago - lovely lovely man.
Normally spend £15-£20 for 7-10 days meat for 2.
    Generally get...
mince, braising steak, chicken breast, pie, gammon, rump steak, sausages, burgers, bacon and sandwich ham. The only thing I find a bit pricey is the ham, but that's probably cos once you've put it in bog standard bread with salad cream or cheese the difference isn't massive.
I love the tips on how to cook stuff as well.

And for those who use butchers... As an alternative to pigs in blankets try..
Sausage meat rolled and skewered with metal skewers, wrapped in bacon in the oven for 20 mins. Totally gorgeous and works out quite cheaply. :-)
    Bump due 22nd September
