i got a loin of pork for sunday, yesterday, and it cost about £5 ceaper than it would have at a supermarket and tbh unless i get the finest joint of pork recently it just has no taste. last pork chops i got from the same butcher were absolutely gorgeous too so im looking forward to sunday! :D

I used to pass a farm shop, but never dared go in as they didn't have their opening times on the sign. The sign was beside a narrow gap in the hedge, leading down a narrow drive/lane to the shop ... I had visions of me driving down there and coming face to face with them serving up their tea in their kitchen window :)

I can 't go down the narrow lane until I know what times they are open. You'd think they'd have bothered to write on their sign.

Being honest PN several of our farm shops are like this - but they are pleased to see you and just open up for you anyway :D

We live in lincolnshire and have a plethora of farm shops, they all get to know you, and my boys have been shown how to make sausages, have fed the pigs, watched the cows grow up and understand where their food comes from, ethical practice really goes hand in hand. We buy half a pig at a time and the butcher asks us what we want and bags it all up accordingly. All I have to do is put it into the freezer when I get home, for half a pig (roughly 35 kilos of meat - these are rare breed pigs with a fantastic flavour) it costs us £120.

This week however I found a specialist chocolate shop  tucked away with truffles to DIE for. I had to leave before I put on a lot of weight, just goes to show though its worth taking that turning :rotfl:(I spent 35 minutes in there just tasting chocolate!!)

Lovely barrows of fresh and mainly local veg at our local one these days. Cutting down those food miles and so much fresher.

And for a couple of weeks only - award winning sausages half price! I went in yesterday and stocked up in a big way! They also have a freezer and when meats come up to their sell by date they freeze and offer 3 for 2. I got 3 for 2 frozen free range chucks the other day (3 meals a piece) and proper free range chicken breast fillet yesterday. Looking out for the 3 for 2 half price sausages if they don't clear the shelves!

Also, wonderful plants from an on-site social enterprise (only £1.25 for large potted cyclamen).

So I agree with the OP - DO try your local farm shop. And don't leave it til Christmas Eve because the queues will be too big to find what you're looking for unless you're a regular!
  • sounds good & i agree but i find it hard as live in the city & the one shop i drive near is closed when i finish work :(
Hopefully when my work moves i might find a new one :)

What a lovely idea... if only things worked like that in my odd little world :)

Unless I know the rules, I can't just go. I have to know if they are open before I turn in. It's the rules.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one!!!

I discovered my local butcher, fishmonger and greengrocer a few years back - would never buy anything I can get from these now in the supermarket as these are much better quality and sometimes even cheaper. I can also get exactly what I want so if I only want a small amount of something, thats what I get. Both fishmonger and butcher will bag and label stuff if they know I want it for the freezer.

I always buy from Donald Russell online. Can't beat the quality plus don't have to leave the house.

Also really like the Howies range from Sainsburys.
  • totally agree with this thread. Haven't cut our Supermarkets altogether but Mr Hussey butchers in Wapping is amazing (probably why he's been there for so many years)
