  • I do part-time work as a freelance programmer, for convenience i use a high speed broadband connection. I have been an AOL member for almost 3 years, and about the same as a BT customer. After being a BT customer for a year i moved house and they gave me a new account; i'm not sure if this is a 'house move' protocol, but i received a new account number. Eighteen months later i did the same and received a new account number again.

Question 1: Does me being a BT customer for nearly 3 years count for anything? It seems i could have just as easily created 3 different accounts at 3 different addresses and still have no advantage over being a 'loyal' customer.

I moved from a privately let flat. They arent required to pay rehousing costs, despite it being their fault entirely for my forced move.

"I didn't think you could get BT Basic + DSL." Not sure i understand; I originally became a BT customer solely to allow an AOL connection. The standard 'BT phoneline is required' for connection; does this mean having BT as a provider? Could i have connected to AOL using the Telewest phone socket?

It does not matter how long you have been with BT if a new line is required or if it requires an engineers visit to set up , you normally have to pay a full connection fee. You can get half price connection if you sign an 18 month contract, you can also pay the £125 in four instalments if you wish to.

You cant get BT Basic if you are using ADSL eg AOL Broadband. See:

You can only get Virgin Media Broadband on a cable socket. You need a BT line for AOL.

Some AOL customers have their broadband connection via the NTL/Virgin network.

  • They have to be the worse company i have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. I shake with anger whenever i have to try and call them.

They are a multi-billion pound company but can never ever get customer service right.

I was recently told TWICE that the connection fee of £124.99 would be waived and i even recorded one of the times i was told. Guess what, BT are still charging me and don't care what i have recorded.

I don't buy the argument that Openreach charge BT because they are the same company and are effectively charging themselves (probably for dodgy tax reasons)

I wont pay it. They will take me to court before i do and i will happily play the recording for the judge and see what he says.

I would be very happy if BT went under tomorrow. They are a prime example of how NOT to treat customers

BT = *******
  • I recently moved home and asked British Telecom to move my telephone line to my new address. I have been a customer with them for over 27 years, and I was told that there could be a charge for this, which there was, £124.99.

I have now transferred my account to Tiscali which includes line rental, broadband & call charges.

British Telecom have sent me a final bill with an additional charge of £70.00 for early disconnection, as they say that on moving this line I have started a new 12 month contract, which was amended in their terms & conditions on the 1st May 2007.

I was never informed of this change to my contract, there is no mention of this on their website on moving home, and also I was never told about this by the customer adviser when booking the move.

I feel that I have been misled by British Telecom and if I had known these charges existed, I would have transferred to Tiscali before moving to my new address. Surely this information should not be kept hidden and customers should be informed of any charge that might be made.

The 12 month minimum term has been in place for some time now.

    http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayCategory.do?categoryId=CON-NEW-LINE-R1

"If there's a working BT line in the property connection should be free of charge, but if the line needs to be reconnected to BT or a new line is required, a connection charge of £124.99 will apply. Minimum term of 12 months applies."

If you had of moved to Tiscali before your move it would not have made any difference. Tiscali are not interested in moving customers, and dont supply new lines. They would have told you to go back to BT to get a new line.
