  • i think that because an engineer visited your property that work somewhere in the network was probably required ...they may also have had to connect at the exchange.
it is my understanding that at the moment this would mean that the £124.99 charge would be raised
  • i just find it appalling that (to me) he was here 5 mins with a gadget on the box outside that he then brought inside to test the line then he was gone.
he did not explain to me what work he had done nor did he leave any form of worksheet etc....so basically it means that i have to beleive what BT are telling me, then again even that varies.

  • you can't tell what work he has done before he came to the property and again as far as i know it's a standard charge now for 'connecting' the line

And the special offer for half price connection is entirely at teh discretion of the advisor who places the order, we are told it is to be a last ditch offer to get you to sign up.

This may have been mentioned before but just in case....I've just moved into my flat and had BT installed so I could get a Sky package. When I called to have instalation setup with Sky they informed me that they would refund 124.99 to my sky account if I got BT in order to get Sky. I got the refund 5 days after filling in the form.

So if you're on the same package as me (16pounds tv package plus 5pounds broadband) you will get Sky for free for the first 6 months in that time you can pay off the BT bill on their Pay Monthly scheme which works out as 32pounds per month for me. So it doesn't seem quite as bad.

All Sky have done is cover your BT Connection fee. You still have to pay them £252 a year for their service.

good to know. Anyone else had success in haggling in this way?

Consensus seems to be sharply divided in this forum between people who say "just bite the bullet and pay" and "money save at all costs". My opinion is that MSE.com is all about the latter. If you can get away with it, why not?

It's in black & white here.

  • I am moving house this week, I hope this helps someone else.
I was shocked to find I would have to pay £124.99 to reconnect in my new home.
My only alternative was to connect to Virgin through a new cable connection with a one off £10 charge on signing up for phone and broadband (£20 discount for signing up for two product online). I would have to wait for this and have the hassle of taking time off work and clearing the work with the rental agency.

I rang BT today just before signing with Virgin Media and told them I was leaving them due to the charge. 10 minutes on hold and they completely caved to no charge and reconnection on my moving day on the 10th April. I had already rang the day before to try and simply move the service and found out about the charge and that all our service connections would be delayed so I hung up telling them I would investigate the alternatives.
When I hesitated as the rate was still more expensive they also agreed to lower my broadband charge to a customer retention level (we have less then a month left on the contract with them).

I'm now paying 29 pounds a month (14 pounds less than before and 3 pounds less than Virgin) and I got the service I wanted phone & BB option 3 from the day I wanted it including an engineer and much less hassle.

I'm generally not good at these things but I didn't need to haggle I just stated my intentions and that was enough. I genuinely had already made up my mind I didn't think there was anyway they would cut the price that far. Someone else may have done even better but I'm happy. :j
(I posted this on a moving house thread but this seemed the more appropriate place to post.)

    Hi,
i'm not sure if i can ask here but i can't seem to find out how to post a new thread on this forum. My mum is 77 and is having dreadful problems trying to get her phone connected by BT we have phoned and emailed but to no avail. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction. We don't know if we can use another company to install a landline for her as BT are hopeless. Sorry for the intrusion.
