    Ging84.

If your the first customer in a new development they can/will charge you full or half price connection as explained in previous post to yours, subject to you signing a 12/18 month contract.

Whilst you have to keep your line rental with them for the contract period or pay a cancellation fee, you can still use another call or broadband supplier.

The other alternative is to get line fitted by cheaper landline connection supplier, but they normally ask you to sign a 12 month contract or take their broadband.

I dont understand there seem to be several posts saying that you can just pay the £125 charge and choose a differnt surplier
every time i have phoned BT to have my line connected they have inisted that the only way i can get connected is to pay the charge and sign up for 12 months
Welcome to the MSE forums Ging84.

You're probably confusing 'choose a different supplier' with 'choose a different calls provider'.

Leaving your line rental with BT is the best option anyway - so the fact that you have to agree to a 12 month contract for line rental doesn't matter (see the 'HERE' link in my signature below).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • When BT first called me back about supplying a new line, I was told I could spread the £125 fee over 12 months if I paid by Direct Debit. Since then I have cancelled my order, tried cable with no luck and now gone back to BT. Now I can find no mention of this option on either their website, via Google or 150. Can anyone shed any light on this or was I misinformed from the start? True, you'd still be paying £125, but it's a much softer blow at £10.42 a month
  • thanks Ypaymore those are the kind of links i am looking for
but unfortunatly hienz might be right they may not actully save me any money

the coop one is no cheap and the mad as a fish one does not seem to tell me anywhere the minimum contract term

are there any other companies i can look at?

I'm afraid you will have to pay a connection/installation fee to BT (or whoever else you decide to join).

This is because in the case of 'new builds' Openreach (the part of BT which install lines) and/or the developers will have largely 'pre installed' a new line on the assumption that a person living there will want to use the telephone line and its better to do this work while the property is being built then fit wiring afterwards..

However, the developers never pay Openreach for this - so the first person who moves in and wants to use the telephone line has to pay the connection/installation charge.

For what its worth BT are currently offering half price connection if you agree to keeping your line rental with them for 18 months and make 10 calls per month/30 per quarter via them.

    Regards
    Sunil
    Thanks Sunil,
So if I go for the 62.50 option, the only advantage is half price line rental? Calls cost the same but i'm contracted to making 10 per month?
If I didn't make 10 calls, what would happen?

No, it's half price connection, not half price line rental.

If you don't make the required 10 calls each month for the 18 months of the contract, you'll be charged the other £62.50 for the connection.

    Oops, that's what I meant.
Would you advise I go for the 1/2 price option Heinz as I don't really intend to use the phone but i'm sure I will.

TBH, yes - but opt for BT Together Option 1 and, then, only make the required 45p worth* (10 x 4½p evening or weekend UK 01/02 calls of less than an hour) of calls each month on BT.

For how to save money on the rest of your calls, see the 'HERE' link in my signature below.

    * You could save a little on that too by sensible use of BT's Friends & Family discounts.

I can understand being charged £125 for a new connection, but they want to charge me £125 to change back to the Home Broadband from a BT business Broadband, and so far I cannot find anywhere on the BT site where it states this charge, anyone else being charged for staying with BT.
