The first part of that last sentence worries me a little but, as business telecoms contracts and costs are entirely diferent, I suppose you not understanding the T&Cs for your residential setup is possible.
Indeed it is different - I don't deal with the T&C's (purchasing) though - I sort the engineering side, but am also able to determine when/where and how a line should be installed/removed.0 -

Yes, though BT are offering a special offer at the moment only £29.99 or zero if you take BT Broadband.

That's exactly the postion I was in when I moved into my new build 7 years ago.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
This is my situation; I would appreciate any advice because I'm going round in circles here!
I've recently moved into a rented flat. The building was originally a single property but was re-developed into separate flats. There is a brand new phone socket in my flat, with a BT Openworld logo. The phone is live - there is a dial tone and I rang my mobile to obtain the number.
We've spoken to BT twice and they say the line isn't theirs. In one of the calls they said they couldn't see the provider which meant it was likely a cable line. However, there are no cable providers in the area. I rang 150 which I believe is a Virgin number and got a message saying this wasn't available. I've also tried 17070 which read the phone number back as the circuit and listed the "BT Line Test Facilities". Surely this is only available to BT lines?
To make things more confusing, I've gone on BT's website and checked broadband speed availability for current BT lines, and it liked 'my' phone number (I even tried putting in a different number and it complained it wasn't with BT). However, on the phone line section of their website if I put in the same number and postcode, it complains that it is not a BT line!
The letting agent said initially that BT had disconnected all the phone lines to the property accidentally and were reconnecting them. As it is a new development, I would have thought it a given that BT would install the lines. What I can't fathom is why BT themselves have said they don't manage the phone number I've given them over the phone.
All I want is to rent a landline and then run broadband over it (not with BT if I can help it, looking at O2). I don't mind using BT for line rental, but wouldn't want to pay a £127.99 connection charge for a property when I'm one month into a six month tenancy (surely if the line has a dial tone, the line connection charge would not apply?).
If a line is installed but 'unrented', should it be possible to dial out from it? Is there any way to confirm that this is a BT line so that I can ring them back up and politely insist that it is infact with them? Another fear I have is that I've somehow inherited a second socket from another flat that have phone/broadband and am picking up their number. I wouldn't want to disconnect anybody!0 -
You've got to take into account the separation between BT Retail and BT Openreach/Wholesale. Might well be a BT Wholesale line but not a BT Retail line and quite rightly they should have no knowledge which provider the line is actually leased to.
Can take a while for a line to be stopped so could well be that the line will suddenly go dead and charges may apply to reactivate it, try Post Office or Idnet for short rental terms and activation. Others are available.“I look like Spiderman at a funeral”~ Karl Pilkington0 -
Hi,
I’m new to this forum, and have tried to search for someone with the same issue as me but the thread is so long I’ve probably missed it.
My boyfriend and I had a BT phone line installed last week, with a discounted price. We received a BT order confirmation which clearly states we are entitled to a £98 credit - which saves us £100 off the new line installation cost. The order confirmation states that the total one off charge will be 29.99, plus our monthly line rentalTotal one-off charges
£29.99Total monthly charges£11.54
However BT are now saying that the discount does not exist. We have sent them their original order confrimation (above) which clearly states the credit we are entitled to, but they are refusing to honour this discount. I understand that credit means it'll be credited back to the monthly bills, BUT at the moment BT are saying this will not happen. the most they are going to offer us is £12 off as compensation for the phone calls my partner has had to make.
Can any one advise? We do not pay by direct debit so the invoice from BT has not been paid, as we want to get the inconsistencies addressed before parting with cash.
Any advice/help etc appreciated.
Thanks!
Dont pay this shower a PENNY until they sort this. Tell them your going straight to Ofcom and Watchdog to inform them of BT trying to extort money from you.

Hi all,
Just spoken to BT about the status of my landline. I originally paid to have this connected when I moved in but subsequently chose to close my account some years later. Since closing my account it seems my landline has been disconnected as there is no longer a dial tone so I've been told I would have to pay 127.99 again. This seems rather a racket to me, anyone else found themselves in this situation? Having paid out once I'm anti paying this again.0 -
Having recently moved into our new house we called BT to get a phone and broadband, told them there are phone connections here and they put the order through but then called us back and told us we would need to pay 127.99 for connection too, apparently the phone line has been redundant too long, sky offered to connect for £30, confirmed with them that we don't have a working line and they said it would definately only cost £30. Then today I got a phone bill from talktalk for previous owners, called them up and they confirmed that we do have a workoing line here and they could set us up an account if we wanted. So BT were going to charge us £127.99 for what exactly? Seems a bit odd to me.0

Hi, I am currently looking to activate a bt line on the autumn tariff (simply because it waives the connection fee and it looks to be a decent deal). The phone line was installed as it is a nearly new (3yrs old) build but as yet not activated. however I live in rented property and not sure how long I will remain there, I very much doubt it will be for the 18 months of the contract.
I have been trying to find a number to contact them which they seem to keep very well hidden on the website. Does anyone know an appropriate number to call so I can ask a few questions.
ie if i move can all be transferred to that address rather than simply cancel and a few other little things.
Thanks for you r help.0
