To be honest PhoneCheap is the only access number I use so I should be fine. No other calls made from my phone.

Are you aware Virgin charge a lot more then BT to call 0844/0871 access numbers.

No, but I wasn't planning to get a phone anyway as Skype is cheaper (well on international landlines, not mobiles) so I can just not use it. My original plan was to get XL TV and L broadband which is only 20p/m (£2.4/y) cheaper then if you take phone as well so I decided to give it a try. I can always get rid of the phone after 12 months :)
    Regards,
    Arthur

... but yesterday I've got an email about line rental going £0.50 up on 1 October...

Same email just hit my inbox

Sample letter on site did not display for me in Google Chrome Browser but displays fine in IE Browser.

Shocked by the way it does not tell customers how much their call costs are going up or even directly point them to where they can find out.

    Try reading it again.;)

    Thanks Ypaymore.

On-line letter is totally clear - I can read it in IE not Goggle Chrome. Rechecked Email and contains same - after signature end of page - wording at start of email and letter different.

Letter: You can find more details on the back of this letter or by visiting bt.com/callchanges
Email: You can find more details below.

I mistook what below meant. Also unsure why they deleted or by visiting bt.com/callchanges from email.

    Original post updated.

There was a thread on this forum but I can't find it now. It was about new line installations and the connection charge. Someone was asking what their options were as they were renting for a 6 month term.

I'm in the same situation so used a link someone posted to sign up for a new line with the a £30 connection charge.

My line got activated yesterday . Just checked the mail sent to the new property and they've stated the connection charge is £127.xx with no mention of the discount that made it £30 when I signed up. I've got an email confirming the order price.

I'm waiting to see what they charge me....but did anyone else sign up for this deal?

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker Car Insurance Carver!
The £95 appears as a credit item on your first quarterly bill.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

  • Hi everyone,

Been reading back through the last few pages of this very informative thread but still looking for a bit of advice if anyone could point me in the right direction...

Anyway, I recently moved house. Previous owners were with BT and there was a phone with a dial tone installed. As I understood it a 'soft' line that could be reconnected simply.

"Connection charge only applies in some cases – most of our new customers find they don't need to pay this charge."

"If your home has had a telephone service from BT in the recent past, and the wiring and socket is undamaged and the line still has a dial tone, it's likely you won't need to pay this charge."

The above from BT lead me to believe that this should be the case, however when I phoned BT to enquire they told me their computer said there was no line and I'd be charged. I pointed out the fact there was a line but as we were in a rush to get a line in (no mobile phone reception!) I bit the bullet and coughed up for 18 mnth broadband and calls deal as they reduced the £129 connection fee by about £50.

Today the engineer arrived and confirmed that there was indeed a line in to the house that was active and BT had made a mistake in charging me. Just spoken to BT who say both me and the engineer are wrong and the fact that I accepted the charges in the 1st place and the fact an engineer had to come out I would be charged.

I know its not a huge amount of money but more the fact that there isn't a way around a mistake their end that I'm getting charged for.

Any info much appreciated, and thanks to anyone who got all the way through my ramblings!

    Cheers
    James
