Dispute it. It should obviously not have been a chargeable connection.
    Installing your new phone line

When you order a new landline we check your property to see if we can connect you easily or if you need an engineer visit. If a connection charge applies – most people find they don't need to pay this – it costs £30 if you're just taking a BT line or free with any broadband package.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • The cust services guy just kept telling me this is a charge that 'everyone knows' about so I have to pay it no matter what I agreed/was advised to at the time or whether the engineer did anything whatsoever.

I did manage to get him to raise up a complaint/dispute though so hopefully something will come of it. I take it the best way to deal with it at the moment is just to use their internal complaints thing? The direct debit already went through so not much I can do there anyway.
  • Well, the CEO seems to reckon I need to pay the charge too, but apparently I will be contacted by the service team so we'll see how that goes.
  • Ok, apparently the 'final decision' is that a connection fee is still chargeable as an engineer had to do something in the exchange. Whether this is BT policy or not I don't know, I still don't think it's very fair that the website specifically states the charge is for a home visit, as that's where I got my information from prior to agreeing to anything. Anyone think this is worth continuing outside of the internal BT complaints process?
  • what's the usual connection charge for a new line?

is there an option to take a new line without signing up to a contract?
  • Having a really baad time with BT..

I called BT a couple of weeks ago as I am moving to a house around the corner.

The house I am moving to has a talk talk line.. When I booked my move for the line, the line was checked and was told everything is fine and the number will be switched over on the 1st of August, as it is active and there will be no charge..

All appeared fine until last week, i got a text message to say my order had been cancelled and to contact customer services..

Well I called to only to be told that the person living at the address has not consented to the line takeover and that BT openreach have canceled it as Talk Talk are not allowing permission. I was told that all I had to was ensure that a stop was placed by the current owner with Talk Talk giving permission that the line can be taken over by BT and the line changeover will still take place on the 1st of August.

Well everything was confirmed with the current owner , in fact she had cancelled with talk talk last wekk monday..

So i called BT again today only to be told that I will be charged £130 for the move.. I dont understand as this was never detailed before, there is an active line and there is no need for an engineer to visit as all connections are fine.. needlas to say I am PEEVED about this and am now thinking I may be better off with sky..

Has any body else taken over a talk talk line when they moved and been charged??

    any advise is appreciated.

I had to pay £130 when i moved to my present house 3 years ago. There was a line to the house. No one came out.
I am now moving enxt month to a house where there is a line but the current tenant has had it cut off apparently due to non payment.
Am i going to have to pay £130 again to reconnect it?
How is this fair when new customers get connected for free?
If when i ring they say i will need to pay could i then cancel my services? And when we move get my partner to order the new line so he gets free connection?
    Thank you

  • Hi, I also am very unhappy re BT connection charges. I moved 3 weeks ago and as well as having a new line installed requiring an engineer I subscribed to a broadband and calls package, Despite it being advertised as free connection, and saying under FAQs 'connection of a new phone line is now free with all our packages (normal price £130), I have still been charged £130. I queried it and a gentleman rang me and I think he said I had to pay because an engineer came out, but to be honest I found him very difficult to understand. I'm sorry I ever went with BT now, and if there was anyway to cancel without being charged for 18months I would
