Well, the fact that they had major problems scares me, I don't know much about it though to be honest hence the question. So, in that case would Northern Rock now be as safe as any other due to the government guarantees on £50k per institution?

I've applied for the Abbey Isa now, hopefully that will come through in the next few days and I can start to make arrangements regarding the transfer out of Nationwide. I am wondering if I should top my ISA right up before I transfer it, and then start adding in the new tax year to Abbey? I've already added about half my allowance.

No to both. It is much safer than all the others because it is now owned by the government. Therefore the £50k limit does not apply either and you can exceed it because the bank will not go bust unless the whole UK does.

This may change in the future if it is sold off and the government withdraws its guarentee, but for now there is nowhere safer.

The 3.5% Coventry Poppy rollover bond fixed until 30/4/11 is looking better by the day the way providers are cutting and withdrawing issues!

If you're funding the MMBS account by DD I suggest you check that it has completed successfully. Mine just failed, seemingly as a result of MMBS not getting the DD set up in time.

That`s the only way you can fund it.

Have you lost the MMBS account?

No, I've had to send a cheque, goodness knows whether it'll clear by Christmas. I'm not best pleased - I've got a largish sum sitting in my current account earning 0.1%!

Stompa: I think the chances are good it will clear before the holiday. OH had to open by cheque as he didn't pass online ID, we sent it Special last week so they had it next day, and it was taken from our account 2 days later, so they clearly banked/presented it on the day of receipt. (Mine went through DD, but I'd delayed it from the earliest option of 10th to 15th, and it went out fine yesterday.)

Thanks for the reassurance. I sent the cheque SD this morning so, Royal Mail permitting, it should get there tomorrow. Fingers crossed!
